Ebba Grön was a Swedish punk band formed in Stockholm in 1977, and was a trailblazer in the punk scene. The band’s original lineup included Joakim Thåström (lead vocals, guitar), Gunnar Ljungstedt (drums), and Lennart Eriksson (bass guitar, backing vocals), known by their aliases Pimme, Gurra, and Fjodor, respectively. Later, Anders Sjöholm, alias Stry Terrarie, joined as a keyboardist after their second album’s release in 1981. The band decided to disband on February 21, 1983.

Band History

In December 1977, during a party in Rågsved, a Stockholm suburb, Thåström, Gurra, and Fjodor formed The Haters, which later transformed into Ebba Grön. They adopted the name “Ebba Grön” as a codeword used by the police in Operation Leo. The band’s early controversial song, “Skjut en snut” (Shoot a cop), was never officially recorded.

Ebba Grön’s debut single, “Antirock,” was self-published in 1978, marking the beginning of their intense touring period. Their first album, We’re Only In It For The Drugs in 1979, featured anarchist lyrics and addressed the challenges faced by young people in working-class suburbs.

In 1980, their cover of Blå Tåget’s “Den ena handen vet vad den andra gör,” renamed “Staten och kapitalet” (The State and the Capital), became their most famous song. The subsequent album, Kärlek & Uppror (Love and Rebellion) in 1981, showcased a shift away from pure punk, incorporating catchy melodies that resonated with a broader audience.

The addition of keyboardist Stry in 1981 brought new influences, and the band continued to evolve. Their third album, Ebba Grön in 1982, demonstrated a departure from punk, featuring keyboards and horns. Despite challenges, the band carried on without Fjodor, releasing their last album under the name Ebba Grön in 1982.
