Crumbsuckers
Crumbsuckers were a significant force in the punk and crossover thrash scene, emerging from Baldwin, Nassau County, New York, in 1982. Founded by bassist Gary Meskil, the band swiftly carved out a unique niche by blending elements of thrash and hardcore punk into their sonic concoction.
History
Formation and Rise to Fame (1982–1986)
In the early ’80s, Crumbsuckers burst onto the scene, fueled by the raw energy of founding members Gary Meskil, Dave Brady, Dave Wynn, and Kevin “Toast” Carroll. Their inaugural demos, recorded in the infamous Crumbsucker Cave, set the stage for their ascent. By 1985, with the addition of guitarist Chuck Lenihan and drummer Dan Richardson, their sound evolved, veering toward a sharper, metal-influenced edge. This transformation laid the groundwork for their groundbreaking debut album.
Life of Dreams (1986)
In 1986, Crumbsuckers unleashed their debut album, Life of Dreams, upon the world. Recorded at Systems Two Studios in Brooklyn and released through Combat Records, the album ignited a frenzy among fans and critics alike. With tracks like “Trapped” and “Return to the Womb,” the band showcased their signature blend of punk aggression and metal prowess. Despite mixed reviews, Life of Dreams solidified Crumbsuckers’ position as pioneers of the crossover thrash movement.
Beast on My Back and Transition (1988)
Following the success of their debut, Crumbsuckers embarked on their sophomore effort, Beast on My Back, in 1988. While the album marked a departure from their previous sound, incorporating gloomy piano passages and intricate instrumentals, it failed to resonate with audiences as expected. The departure of lead vocalist Chris Notaro further compounded the band’s challenges, signaling a period of transition and uncertainty.
Reunion and Legacy
Despite the ups and downs, Crumbsuckers’ legacy endured. In 2015, they graced the stage once more at the Black N’ Blue Bowl Festival, reuniting with Chris Notaro on vocals. This reunion, coupled with their influential discography, cemented Crumbsuckers’ status as trailblazers in the annals of crossover thrash.
Musical Style
Crumbsuckers’ musical style defied categorization, blending elements of hardcore punk, thrash, and metal. Known for their intense live performances and gritty vocals, they left an indelible mark on the CBGBs matinee crowd. Tracks like “Just Sit There” and “Shit’s Creek” epitomized their ferocious energy and uncompromising attitude.
Other Information
The band’s name, Crumbsuckers, originated from a chance encounter in the Baldwin High School cafeteria, where Gary Meskil coined the term after observing a fellow student’s peculiar eating habits.
Crumbsuckers’ influence extended beyond their music, with guitarist Chuck Lenihan playing a pivotal role in securing a record deal for another Long Island band, Majesty, later known as Dream Theater.
After their dissolution, members of Crumbsuckers embarked on diverse musical endeavors, with Gary Meskil founding Pro-Pain and Chuck Lenihan joining bands like Genitorturers and Electric Hellfire Club.
