D.O.A.
D.O.A. is a legendary punk rock band from Vancouver, Canada, and is often credited as one of the pioneers of hardcore punk. Alongside bands like Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, and Germs, D.O.A. helped shape the hardcore punk sound. Their 1981 album, Hardcore ’81, is frequently cited as one of the first references to the second wave of American punk music, solidifying their place in punk history.
Political Activism and Philosophy
Throughout their career, D.O.A. has been known for their politically charged lyrics and their dedication to activism. The band’s slogan, “Talk Minus Action Equals Zero”, represents their belief in the power of direct action and social change. Their music frequently addresses topics such as anti-racism, environmentalism, anti-globalization, and freedom of speech. Their 1981 single, “Burn it Down”, was released to raise funds for the Vancouver 5 defence fund.
Formation and Early Years (1977–1980)
D.O.A. was formed in early 1978 by Joey “Shithead” Keithley, who has remained the band’s driving force throughout its existence. The original lineup included bassist Randy Rampage and drummer Chuck Biscuits, with Harry Homo briefly serving as the lead vocalist. After several lineup changes, the band recorded their first single, “Disco Sucks”, which quickly gained attention and led to their growing popularity in the North American punk scene.
Hardcore ’81 and the Rise of Hardcore Punk (1981–1989)
In 1981, D.O.A. released Hardcore ’81, which played a significant role in popularizing the term “hardcore punk”. Following the release, the band underwent a series of lineup changes but continued to release influential records. Their political stance became more prominent with albums such as War on 45 (1982), and they began incorporating elements of reggae and funk into their music.
Breakup, Reunion, and Continued Success (1990–Present)
In 1990, D.O.A. briefly disbanded but reunited in 1992 with a new lineup. They released several albums during the 1990s and 2000s, including collaborations with Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys fame. Keithley also started his own label, Sudden Death Records, which has released music by D.O.A. and other Canadian punk bands. The band’s lineup has changed frequently, with Keithley remaining the sole original member.
Recent Activity
D.O.A. continues to tour and release music, with their most recent albums including Hard Rain Falling (2015), Fight Back (2018), and Treason (2020). The band remains committed to their activist roots and often performs at benefit shows and political events.
