Blitz
Blitz was an English punk rock band formed in 1988 in New Mills, Derbyshire. Known for mixing punk with various styles and their strong left-wing politics, Blitz made a notable impact on the British punk scene during the early 1990s.
Biography
Early Years and Formation
Frontman Matty ‘Blagg’ Roberts, formerly of Complete Control, and vocalist Bilko from Anti Social Workers, laid the groundwork for the band’s formation. Blitz released their debut 7-inch EP All Out Attack on the No Future label in 1981, which was followed by their first album Voice of a Generation. The album received high praise, including a five-star review from Sounds magazine, and established Blitz in the UK indie charts.
Rise in the Indie Scene
During the early 1990s, Blitz enjoyed considerable success on the UK indie charts with releases on Words of Warning and later signed a deal with EMI in 1993. They achieved commercial success with minor hit singles such as “Stresss” and “Oxygen.” Their energetic live performances and politically charged lyrics, combined with their blending of punk with hip hop and electronic dance music elements, set them apart in the scene.
Challenges and Breakup
Despite rising popularity, Blitz faced criticism from some fans for signing with a major label like EMI due to its controversial background. In 1993, frontman Roberts was involved in a confrontation with a journalist, resulting in legal issues and negative media attention that led to cancelled festival slots and EMI dropping the band in 1994. After Roberts left the band, internal tensions and diminishing interest in touring led to their disbandment by 1996. Matty ‘Blagg’ Roberts passed away in 2000.
Post-Breakup and Legacy
Following the breakup, a new version of the band named Blaggers AKA was formed in 2002, performing across Europe and benefits for activist causes. While they haven’t released new recordings, their live performances have continued to echo the original band’s rebellious spirit.
Style and Politics
Blitz started with a typical Oi! style before incorporating hip hop, electronic dance music, and brass sections. Their lyrics were distinctly left-wing, advocating anti-fascist and anti-capitalist messages. The band maintained strong ties with activist groups such as Red Action and Anti Fascist Action, using their music and resources to support political causes and direct action against neo-Nazi groups.
