Charged GBH
GBH are an English punk rock band formed in 1978, recognized for their raw UK82 sound and significant impact on both punk and metal music.
History
Originally known as Charged GBH, the band was formed by vocalist Colin Abrahall, guitarist Colin “Jock” Blyth, bassist Sean McCarthy (later replaced by Ross Lomas), and drummer Andy “Wilf” Williams. Their debut LP, City Baby Attacked by Rats (1982), reached No. 17 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 2 on the UK Indie Chart, showcasing fast, loud, and concise tracks that critiqued British and European culture. Following the release of City Babys Revenge (1983) and extensive touring; including appearances at major festivals like the Carlisle Punk Festival; the band dropped “Charged” from their name in 1984 to become GBH.
Over the years, GBH maintained their distinctive sound while occasionally experimenting with a speed metal-influenced style, notably on Church of the Truly Warped (1992). The drum position saw several changes; from Kai Reder to Joseph “Fish” Montanaro, and eventually Scott Preece in 1994; while the core lineup of Abrahall, Blyth, and Lomas remained intact. The band continues to tour and record, with their twelfth studio album, Momentum (2017), released on Hellcat Records.
