Chemical People

A gritty Los Angeles punk band

Chemical People were an American punk rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1986 that toured the US, Canada, and Europe before breaking up in 1997.

History

The band’s initial line-up was Dave Nazworthy (aka Dave Naz) on vocals, drums, and guitar, Ed Urlik on bass, Jaime Pina on guitar, and Blair Jobe on vocals and guitar. Jobe left before the release of their debut album So Sexist! in 1988. They followed this with Ten-Fold Hate in 1989, featuring hardcore pornography as a recurring lyrical theme, with guest vocals by Jack Baker on the track “Black Throat” and porn star Taija Rae on the cover.

In 1990, Nazworthy and Urlik joined forces with Dave Smalley to form Down by Law. They then returned to Chemical People and released the mini-set Angels ‘n’ Devils later that year. The band also contributed soundtrack material to several porn films, which were later compiled on the 1991 album Soundtracks.

After Jaime Pina departed, guitar duties were shared by Dave Naz, Ed Urlik, and Redd Kross guitarist Robert Hecker, leading to the self-titled album Chemical People in 1992. Following a five-year hiatus, the band returned in 1997 with a new album, Arpeggio Motorcade, and subsequently ceased active live performances, although they continue to record occasionally in the studio.
