Christ On Parade
Christ On Parade emerged in 1985 from the San Francisco East Bay scene, fusing political hardcore punk with an unmistakable DIY spirit.
History
Formed in 1985 by former members of Teenage Warning and the peace punks Treason, Christ On Parade made their debut with the EP Sounds of Nature on Pusmort Records. The original lineup featured vocalist Barrie Evans, guitarists Mike Scott and Noah Landis, bassist Malcolm Sherwood, and drummer Todd Kramer. The band quickly gained notoriety in the East Bay, headlining the first-ever show at Berkeley’s 924 Gilman venue.
Known for their explicitly political lyrics, they challenged U.S. foreign policy in tracks like “America the Myth” and dedicated “Landlord Song” to the owner of the New Method Warehouse, all while insisting that their music was an invitation to think independently rather than preach a specific agenda. Their sound also found a place on a Thrasher magazine compilation cassette, Thrasher Skate Rock Vol. 3.
In 1986, Mike Scott departed and was replaced by guitarist Doug Kearney, and in late 1987, Ron Nichols took over bass duties from Sherwood. The band officially disbanded in 1989 after a European tour. In the years following their breakup, members went on to form or join notable acts such as Blister, Neurosis, Econochrist, and Grinch.
In 2008, the original lineup reunited for a European and West Coast tour, returning to the iconic 924 Gilman Street where they had headlined on December 31, 1986. Subsequent tours took them to Japan in 2009 and on a final U.S. tour in 2010.
