Disrupt
Disrupt were a crust punk band from Lynn, Massachusetts, active between 1987 and 1993. Known for their politically anarchist lyrics and raw, distorted sound, the group gained a cult following through a series of underground 7-inch EPs, compilation appearances, and their only full-length album, Unrest. Their songs dealt with themes like animal rights, anti-capitalism, and social collapse, securing their legacy as one of the key American crust punk acts of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Early Years
The band was first formed in 1987 by vocalists Jay Stiles and Pete Kamarinos, guitarist Chris Drake, drummer Harry Haralabatos, and bassist Tony Leone. After recording a rehearsal demo, Leone and Haralabatos left. Brad Jones and Mike Williams joined in 1988, with Williams eventually moving to drums. Stiles covered bass duties, and this lineup recorded the demo Millions Die for Moneymaking in late 1988.
Lineup Shifts and New Recordings
By 1989, Williams and Drake had exited, but Haralabatos returned and Scott Lucid was recruited on bass. That October, the band recorded a five-song demo that was reissued in 1990 as their self-titled EP. Lucid then departed, replaced by Bob Palombo. With Chris Drake briefly returning and Terry Savastano joining on guitar, the band recorded Refuse Planet, released as a 7-inch by Relapse Records in 1991. They also contributed splits with bands like Destroy the same year.
Unrest and Final Years
After more lineup changes, Jeff Hayward joined on guitar and Randy Odierno took over drums in 1991. With this stable lineup, Disrupt recorded multiple splits in 1992, including with Disdain, Resist, Tuomiopaivan Lapset, and Taste of Fear. They also released a live EP, Smash Divisions, recorded in New Haven. In November of that year, they entered One World Studios and laid down 30 new tracks, plus re-recordings of 10 earlier songs, for their album Unrest. The band toured Europe in late 1993, but broke up soon after due to personal and musical differences. Unrest was finally released in 1994 by Relapse Records.
Posthumous Releases
Disrupt’s legacy continued after their breakup. In 2007, Relapse issued a 78-song discography compilation, as well as a limited box set that included Unrest, the discography, and a DVD. Unreleased tracks from the Unrest sessions were later released on 12-inch vinyl by Unrest Records in Canada. In 2008, a self-titled archival LP was also issued. Despite their short career, Disrupt’s chaotic sound and uncompromising politics gave them lasting influence in the crust punk underground.
