Major Accident
Major Accident, sometimes shortened to Accident, is a punk band from the North East of England. Formed in Darlington in the late 1970s, they built a reputation on fast, hooky street punk, loud live shows, and a signature look pulled straight from A Clockwork Orange.
How The Band Got Started
Major Accident came together in Darlington in late 1977. Like a lot of punk bands of that era, they moved quickly from rehearsal room to tape machine, building a set, recording early tracks, and getting out on the road as soon as possible.
By the early 1980s, the band was recording studio material that would point toward their first full-length release, including early versions of songs that later became part of their core catalog.
First Records And The Early Eighties Run
The band’s first studio work in the early 1980s included the single Terrorist Gang backed with Self Appointed Hero, plus an early cut of Massacred Melodies. They re-recorded that material in 1981, which led to their first LP.
Before that first album cycle fully landed, they nearly released Warboots from those sessions and even reached the test pressing stage. Soon after, they signed with Step-Forward Records. Their first single on the label was Mr Nobody, and a UK tour supporting Chelsea helped get the record in front of bigger crowds.
In the years that followed, Major Accident released a run of singles and albums that became key pieces of their early output. They notched UK Independent Chart placements with tracks like Fight To Win and Leaders of Tomorrow, and put out the LP A Clockwork Legion on Flicknife Records during the period when the shortened name Accident was in use.
Live Releases, BBC Footage, And The First Breakup
A live album, Tortured Tunes: The Official Bootleg, arrived in 1984 and also placed on the UK Independent Chart. Around that same stretch, the band appeared on BBC2 and played three songs live.
In 1985, the American label Toxic Shock released …Crazy!. Not long after, the band split up.
The Nineties Return And Later Years
Major Accident re-formed in 1996 and returned to using the full name. The comeback included the studio album The Ultimate High on We Bite Records.
In 1999, they released the seven-inch single Representation Not Reality. The band later issued a split release with Welsh street punks Foreign Legion titled Cry Of Legion, which is described as their final release from that era.
Live activity continued into the 2000s, including a night at CBGB in 2001 built around their “clockwork punk” theme. Over time, the band’s schedule slowed sharply after drummer Laze was involved in a motorcycle accident. According to the material provided, their final gig of that run happened around 2012.
The same source also notes a surprise return to live shows in 2025, including a gig in Darlington and appearances tied to Los Angeles events.
Clockwork Punk Look And What It Meant
Major Accident helped popularize a punk style of dress inspired by A Clockwork Orange. Think bowler hats, white shirts and trousers, and heavy black boots. Leather biker jackets often replaced the film’s coats, although fishtail coats also showed up at times.
That movie connection also extended to how the band presented themselves visually. Their early sleeves and singles leaned into stark black-and-white imagery, later adding red after the 1996 return. One of their best-known references is the …Crazy! cover, which echoes the film’s lab-chair imagery.
The band also nodded at classical music in a very specific way, including interpretations of Beethoven’s Ninth in tracks like The Glorious 9th and The March. It is not exactly a full symphony subscription plan, but it is punk, so it tracks.
