Miles Away
Miles Away are an Australian hardcore punk band from Perth, Western Australia, formed in 2002. Their sound pulls from old school hardcore energy and later expanded through bigger recordings and touring runs across Australia, Europe, and beyond.
How The Band Got Started
Miles Away began in mid-2002 when guitarists Cam Jose and Adam Crowe started writing songs built for an old school hardcore setup. They brought in drummer Chris Unsworth and bassist Dion (who had played in local Perth bands) to round out the early lineup. Vocalist Nick Horsnell joined later in 2002. The group originally used the name Burning Bridges, then switched to Miles Away after discovering another band already using that name.
Early Releases And A Fast Start
From the beginning, the band aimed for songs that worked live, quick tempos, sing-along parts, and the kind of riffs that make a room move. Their early era led into the full-length Miles Away, released on July 12, 2005. That release also gathered earlier material together, including tracks connected to their EP and split releases from the same stretch.
Consequences And The Next Step
The band’s second album, Consequences, arrived in January 2006. It continued their hardcore base while showing a tighter approach in pacing and structure. The record expanded their reach with releases tied to labels in Australia, the US and Europe, plus a Japanese release through Alliance Trax.
Rewind, Repeat… And Keeping The Wheels Turning
In 2007, Miles Away released Rewind, Repeat… through Resist Records in Australia, with additional label support outside the country. By this point the band were touring heavily, putting their sound in front of new crowds while continuing to refine what worked on record versus what hit hardest on stage.
Endless Roads And Recording Abroad
Miles Away recorded Endless Roads with producer Dean Baltulonis at The Wild Arctic Recording Studio in New York City. The album was released in August 2010 through Resist Records in Australia and Anchors Aweigh Records in Europe, with additional label partners in other regions. Around this era, the band also worked on the Memory Embraced 7-inch, which included songs separate from the album sessions. Lineup changes followed, including bass fill-ins during touring, as the group kept their schedule moving.
Tide And Long-Distance Songwriting
After Endless Roads, the band returned with Tide, released May 5, 2015. The writing process stretched across time zones, with Adam Crowe based in Berlin and collaborating with Cam Jose by trading ideas electronically. For recording, the band brought in help from friends, including drum tracking by Andy Reitz, and they recorded at Getaway Studios in Boston with producer Jay Maas. The record was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege. The lineup for this period included Jared Crowe on bass, alongside the core guitar and vocal roles that anchored the band from the start.
