History
Early Years and Debut Album (2003–2006)
A Day to Remember came together in 2003 when several musicians from Ocala decided to start a band. The original lineup included Jeremy McKinnon on vocals, Neil Westfall on guitar, Tom Denney on guitar, Joshua Woodard on bass, and Bobby Scruggs on drums. They released an EP, “Halos for Heros, Dirt for the Dead,” in 2004 and followed it up with their debut album, “And Their Name Was Treason,” in 2005 after signing with Indianola Records. The album sold over 10,000 copies, laying the groundwork for the band’s growing reputation.
Victory Records and For Those Who Have Heart (2006–2008)
In 2006, A Day to Remember signed with Victory Records and replaced Scruggs with Alex Shelnutt on drums. They recorded their second album, “For Those Who Have Heart,” released in January 2007, which charted on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers. The band gained further attention by covering Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” which was included in the re-release of their album in 2008. They toured extensively in the UK and U.S. during this period, solidifying their presence in the rock world.
Homesick and Denney’s Departure (2008–2010)
The band released a remastered version of their debut album titled “Old Record” in 2008. Shortly after, they recorded their third studio album, “Homesick,” which was released in February 2009. The album achieved significant success, reaching number 21 on Billboard’s Top 200 and number 1 on the Top Independent Albums chart. During this time, Tom Denney left the band to focus on his family and was replaced by Kevin Skaff. The band continued to tour extensively, including appearances at major festivals and as part of the Warped Tour lineup.
What Separates Me from You and Lawsuit with Victory (2010–2012)
A Day to Remember’s fourth album, “What Separates Me from You,” was released in November 2010, produced by Chad Gilbert. The album’s release was followed by a legal dispute with Victory Records, with the band filing a lawsuit over royalties and contractual issues. Despite the ongoing legal battle, the band continued to tour, including headline performances at various festivals and on television appearances such as Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Common Courtesy (2012–2014)
In 2013, A Day to Remember self-released their fifth album, “Common Courtesy,” after winning the right to do so in their ongoing lawsuit with Victory Records. The album was released digitally in October 2013, with a physical edition following in November. The band supported the album with extensive tours in the U.S. and Europe, including a live recording in London that was later released as part of a live album.
Bad Vibrations (2015–2018)
The band’s sixth album, “Bad Vibrations,” was released in 2016 through their independent label and Epitaph Records. The album saw the band returning to a heavier sound and was supported by a series of singles and music videos. A Day to Remember continued to tour globally, including a headlining tour with Blink-182 and appearances at major festivals. In 2017, they were honored with keys to the city of Ocala during a homecoming show.
You’re Welcome and Departure of Woodard (2019–Present)
A Day to Remember’s seventh album, “You’re Welcome,” was released in March 2021 under Fueled by Ramen. The album marked a new chapter for the band, featuring singles like “Degenerates” and “Resentment.” In October 2021, founding bassist Joshua Woodard left the band following allegations of misconduct. Despite these challenges, the band continued to release new music and tour, maintaining their connection with their fans.
Musical Style and Influences
A Day to Remember is known for their unique blend of metalcore and pop-punk, a combination that has earned them a dedicated following. Their music often features heavy breakdowns alongside catchy, melodic choruses. The band’s influences include New Found Glory, Blink-182, NOFX, and other punk and hardcore acts. They have been described as blending elements of emo, hardcore, and metal into their sound, a style that Jeremy McKinnon has described as something they created because it was what they wanted to hear, regardless of trends.
