Avail is an American melodic hardcore band from Richmond, Virginia, formed in 1987. Known for their intense punk sound and socially conscious lyrics, Avail has released six studio albums, two live albums, multiple EPs, and has maintained a dedicated fanbase throughout their career.

Formation and Early Years (1987–1999)

Avail was formed in 1987 in Reston, Virginia, by Joe Banks (guitar), Doug Crosby (drums), Brien Stewart (vocals), and Mikey Warstler (bass). The band quickly became a part of the Richmond punk scene, with Joe Banks being the only original member remaining throughout the years. In 1990, they moved to Richmond and solidified their lineup by teaming up with Tim Barry from the rival band LDK (Learning Disabled Kids). This collaboration led to the release of their first album, Satiate, in 1992, which featured lyrics centered on Richmond and local issues.

Breakthrough and Studio Albums (1999–2007)

Throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s, Avail released a series of impactful albums, including Dixie (1994), 4am Friday (1996), Over the James (1998), One Wrench (2000), and Front Porch Stories (2002). Their music, rooted in melodic hardcore and punk rock, often tackled social and political themes, earning them critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase. Although the band has never officially disbanded, they ceased releasing new material after 2002 and stopped performing live shows in 2007.

Hiatus and Reunion (2005–present)

In August 2005, Avail announced an indefinite hiatus to allow members to focus on personal endeavors. During this period, Chris Hughes became a business manager in the music industry, while Rob Kucharek opened American Icon Screen Printing, an apparel screen printing company serving many bands and the BMX industry on the East Coast. In March 2019, Avail announced a reunion show at Skull Fest 11 in Pittsburgh, Virginia, leading to multiple subsequent performances and tours. Since then, they have played multiple shows and continue to tour, although there are currently no plans to release new material.

Musical Style and Themes

Avail’s music is a dynamic fusion of melodic hardcore, punk rock, and hardcore punk. Their sound features aggressive guitar riffs, driving basslines, and powerful vocals, often incorporating melodic hooks and harmonies. Lyrically, Avail addresses a range of social and political issues, including economic struggles, community, and personal resilience, reflecting their commitment to activism and social awareness.
