Black Square
Black Square is an American ska band hailing from Honolulu, Hawaii, formed in 2002. The band initially started as a hardcore punk trio but expanded its lineup significantly over the years. By 2023, the group evolved into a nine-piece ensemble, blending ska, punk, rocksteady, reggae, and hip-hop influences into a unique sound that retains the edge of punk rock.
The band’s name references Kazimir Malevich’s famous 1915 painting, “Black Square,” symbolizing their dedication to creating a bold, impactful musical statement. Known as one of Hawaii’s few touring ska acts, Black Square has completed over a dozen tours across the U.S. mainland and a tour of Japan. They are a local favorite in Honolulu and often travel to other Hawaiian islands for performances. Their high-energy shows and distinctive style earned them a spot on the Vans Warped Tour in 2011, further boosting their national profile.
Over the years, Black Square has released five studio albums and contributed to numerous compilations. Their music has been featured in various media outlets, including Fuel TV, Billabong Surf, and the documentary film Noho Hewa. The band’s commitment to their craft and diverse influences have solidified their reputation within the ska and punk scenes.
