Dag Nasty

Dag Nasty is an influential American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1985. Known for pioneering a more melodic style of hardcore, they have been credited as key influencers in the post-hardcore scene. The band was founded by guitarist Brian Baker (formerly of Minor Threat), drummer Colin Sears, bassist Roger Marbury, and vocalist Shawn Brown. Their sound was characterized by its combination of aggressive punk energy with more melodic elements, drawing influences from bands like The Faith, Descendents, and The Buzzcocks.

Band History

Early Days and Can I Say (1985-1986)

The band’s original lineup included Shawn Brown as the lead vocalist, with whom they recorded early versions of songs that would later appear on their first album, Can I Say. Brown’s tenure was brief, and he was soon replaced by Dave Smalley (formerly of DYS), who recorded the vocals for the official release of Can I Say in 1986. The album quickly became an influential record in the hardcore punk scene, establishing Dag Nasty’s reputation for blending aggression with melodic elements.

Lineup Changes and Wig Out at Denko’s (1987)

Shortly after recording Can I Say, Smalley left the band to attend grad school, and Dag Nasty found their next vocalist, Peter Cortner, through a local ad. The band toured the U.S. with The Descendents and eventually recorded their second album, Wig Out at Denko’s, in 1987. The album was more experimental, further developing their melodic hardcore style, and included several re-recorded tracks from previous demos.

Field Day and First Breakup (1988-1989)

In 1988, Dag Nasty released Field Day, an ambitious album that polarized fans by blending pop melodies, hardcore, and metal riffs. The band took more creative risks, but the result was a love-it-or-hate-it reaction from fans. After touring in support of the album, the band disbanded in late 1988.

Reunions and Four on the Floor (1991-1992)

In 1991, Dag Nasty reunited with Dave Smalley on vocals, releasing the album Four on the Floor on Epitaph Records. This album saw the band returning to their hardcore roots, but the reunion was short-lived, and the band remained inactive for much of the 1990s.

Minority of One and Later Years (2002-2010)

In 2002, Dag Nasty once again reunited with Smalley, releasing Minority of One. The album reflected a return to the band’s more aggressive sound and marked another chapter in their sporadic reunions. In 2010, Dischord Records released Dag with Shawn, a collection of early recordings featuring original vocalist Shawn Brown.

Recent Activity and Tours (2012-Present)

The band reunited again in 2012 with their original lineup, including Shawn Brown on vocals, to support the documentary Salad Days: The DC Punk Revolution. In 2016, Dag Nasty announced a European tour and performed at the Punk Rock Bowling Music Festival in Las Vegas. A new 7-inch single was released on Dischord Records in 2016.
