Defiance

Defiance was a Portland punk band formed in 1993

Defiance is a street punk and anarcho-punk band that formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1993. Blending hardcore aggression with politically charged lyrics, the group quickly gained a following in both the U.S. and abroad. Over the years they have released multiple EPs, full-length albums, and compilations, while also influencing punk outfits such as Anti-Flag and The Unseen.

History

Defiance started in 1993 with members from the Portland bands Deprived, Unamused, and Resist. The early lineup featured Tony Mengis and Alaric Brown on vocals, Mike Arrogant on guitar, Kelly Halliburton on bass, and Eric Alukonis on drums. Their first two EPs, Defiance and Burn, came out through Consensus Reality, Halliburton’s own label. After touring the U.S., Tony left, and Mike and Alaric split vocal duties for the Burn release.

Throughout the mid-1990s, Defiance toured Canada, the U.S., and Europe, releasing European Tour 1995 as a limited-run EP. Their first LP, No Future No Hope, was released in 1996 through Mind Control in the U.S. and Skuld Releases in Europe. Lineup shifts followed, and by 1997 the band issued No Time before entering a period of hiatus.

In 2000, Mike and guitarist Matt reassembled Defiance with new members, recording Out of the Ashes in 2002 for Punk Core Records. The band toured heavily, appearing at festivals like Holidays In The Sun. Subsequent years saw more lineup changes, the release of Against the Law in 2003, and the singles collection A Decade of Defiance. They continued touring in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, sharing stages with groups including The Unseen and Lower Class Brats. In 2011, they released Out of Order on Unrest Records.
