Doggy Style

Doggy Style is a punk rock band from Placentia

Doggy Style is a punk rock band from Placentia, California, born out of the early‑’80s North Orange County scene (Fullerton/Anaheim/Placentia). Formed in 1983 by vocalist Brad “Daddy X” Xavier (later of Kottonmouth Kings and Suburban Noize Records), the band debuted on Mystic Records with the 7-inch EP Work As One. Known for hooky, irreverent skate‑punk and scene‑crossing collaborations, the group’s lineup shifted frequently across its decades-spanning run.

Origins & Scene (1983-1984)

  • Original lineup: Brad “Daddy X” Xavier (vocals), Ed “Shaggy” Caudill (guitar), Ray Jimenez (bass), Lou Gaez (drums).
  • Debut: Work As One (1984, Mystic Records), featuring fan favorite “Donut Shop Rock.”

Building Momentum (1985-1986)

  • Side by Side (1985, Flipside) continued the band’s rapid-fire OC punk trajectory.
  • Live at Sun City (1986, Flipside) captured the group’s rowdy live energy.
  • By late ’86 the band splintered into two concurrent versions using the name “Doggy Style.”

Two Paths, Same Name (1986-1988)

Brad & Lou’s Faction

  • Rebuilt with Brian Baker (ex‑Dag Nasty, Minor Threat) and Doug Carrion (ex‑Descendents): The Last Laugh (1987, National Trust Records).
  • Baker and Carrion soon exited to reform Dag Nasty.
  • Successive lineup: Warren Fitzgerald and Danny Wallis (Don’t No) plus Eric VonArab (Love Canal).
  • Brad & Lou later collaborated in projects including Doggy Rock, Double Freak, Humble Gods, and Kottonmouth Kings.

Ed & Ray’s Faction

  • Lineup included Danny Johnston (drums), Hedge (guitar; D.I./HVY‑DRT), Mark Tolbert and Rib Finley (vocals).
  • Released Doggy Style II (1987, Flipside).
  • Ed was eventually replaced by John “Bosco” Callabero (also of D.I.); issued Don’t Hit Me Up (1988, Triple X).
  • Post‑’88 attempts with Rib Finley, Danny Johnston, and Ray “Beez” alongside Frank Agnew (Adolescents) were short‑lived.

Studio & Comp Moments

  • Appeared on Rat Music for Rat People Vol. III (1987), recorded by Sylvia Massy for CD Presents.

Reformation (2009-present)

  • 2009 lineup: Tim Fyke (vocals), Ed “Shaggy” Caudill (lead guitar), Danny Staggs (rhythm guitar), Mark Tolbert (rhythm guitar), Eric Vedder (bass), Rob Chocek (drums).
