Filthy Thieving Bastards

San Francisco’s Filthy Thieving Bastards mixed folk

The Filthy Thieving Bastards are a folk-punk group from San Francisco, California, formed in 2000 as a side project by Johnny Bonnel and Darius Koski of the Swingin’ Utters. Their sound blends Irish folk, rock, punk, and classic pop influences, often compared to The Pogues for their storytelling and rowdy charm.

How The Band Got Started

The project began when Bonnel and Koski wanted an outlet for songs that didn’t fit within the Swingin’ Utters’ usual punk framework. They recruited fellow Utters member Spike Slawson, along with recording engineer Randy Burk. The band’s name reflected their tongue-in-cheek attitude toward traditional music and rebellion. Their first release, Our Fathers Sent Us (2000), came out on TKO Records and introduced listeners to their rustic, pub-soaked energy.

Folk Roots And Punk Edge

In 2001, the group released A Melody of Retreads and Broken Quills on BYO Records, showcasing a stronger folk foundation laced with punk grit and humor. The album included guest contributions and storytelling that leaned heavily into Celtic and country influences, establishing their signature mix of acoustic drive and poetic roughness.

My Pappy Was a Pistol And Beyond

Their 2005 album My Pappy Was a Pistol paid tribute to American singer-songwriter Roger Miller, weaving honky-tonk flair into their folk-punk core. Two years later, …and I’m a Son of a Gun (2007) expanded that homage, featuring guest appearances like Spider Stacey of The Pogues. Both albums blended harmonicas, mandolins, and boisterous choruses with lyrical themes of heartbreak, rebellion, and working-class pride.

Legacy And Influence

The Filthy Thieving Bastards earned a cult following within both punk and folk communities. Their song “Drug Lords of the Avenues” gained additional recognition after appearing in the soundtrack for the video game Skate. Though the band has kept a lower profile in recent years, their blend of rowdy energy and heartfelt songwriting continues to resonate with fans of traditional and punk crossover music.
