Four Year Strong

Four Year Strong is a Worcester pop-punk band blending melody and hardcore energy

Four Year Strong is a pop-punk band from Worcester, Massachusetts, formed in 2001. The group is known for blending the melodic catchiness of pop-punk with the aggression of hardcore, a sound often labeled as “easycore.” With a catalog that spans over two decades, they’ve grown from high school hopefuls into one of the most enduring names in the scene. The lineup includes vocalists and guitarists Dan O’Connor and Alan Day, bassist Joe Weiss, and drummer Jake Massucco. Their eighth studio album, Analysis Paralysis, was released on August 9, 2024, through Pure Noise Records.

How The Band Got Started

Four Year Strong began in 2001 when a group of friends from Worcester’s Doherty Memorial High School—Dan O’Connor, Alan Day, Jake Massucco, and an early bassist—decided to form a band that played exactly the kind of music they wanted to hear. They self-released their demo EP All the Lonely Girls, followed by The Glory EP in 2003 and a three-track demo in 2004. That same year, Joe Weiss joined as bassist, completing the classic lineup. In 2005, they released their debut album It’s Our Time digitally through Open Your Eyes Records, and hit the road on small U.S. tours with Maida and the Fully Down. By 2006, keyboardist Josh Lyford had joined the group, expanding their sound into a five-piece.

Rise or Die Trying and Explains It All (2006-2009)

The band’s 2007 breakthrough, Rise or Die Trying, released via I Surrender Records, shot to number 31 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Its mix of massive hooks, double-time drums, and shouted choruses made it a staple of late-2000s pop-punk. Their growing success landed them on Decaydance Records in 2008, the label founded by Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz. In 2009, they released Explains It All, a covers album celebrating 1990s songs that shaped their youth. The record included guest appearances from Keith Buckley (Every Time I Die), Travie McCoy (Gym Class Heroes), and members of Less Than Jake. They described it as “a love letter to the songs that made us want to play music in the first place.”

Enemy of the World (2010-2011)

In 2010, Four Year Strong released Enemy of the World through Universal Motown Records. The lead single, “It Must Really Suck to Be Four Year Strong Right Now,” humorously referenced a rival magazine review and became a fan favorite. The album debuted at number 47 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 12,000 copies in its first week. Its mix of tight musicianship and singalong choruses cemented their reputation as one of the top live acts in pop-punk. They toured extensively across North America, Asia, and Europe—though some shows, including dates in Indonesia, were canceled due to logistical issues.

In Some Way, Shape, or Form and Hiatus (2011-2013)

2011 marked a transition period. The band parted ways with keyboardist Josh Lyford, opting for a heavier, more guitar-driven sound. They recorded their fourth album In Some Way, Shape, or Form with producer David Bendeth. Released in November 2011, the album featured songs like “Just Drive,” “Stuck in the Middle,” and “Falling on You,” revealing a more polished and mature side of the band. Despite the lineup change, they continued touring with Rise Against and Blink-182 and appeared on Warped Tour 2012. By 2013, they took their first extended break in years, with Alan Day launching a blues-inspired side project called The Here and Now. Fans speculated a breakup, but the band assured everyone it was just downtime, not the end.

Return to Form: Go Down in History and Self-Titled Album (2014-2016)

Four Year Strong roared back in 2014 with a new deal under Pure Noise Records and the EP Go Down in History. The EP was a return to their high-energy roots, featuring songs like “Tread Lightly.” Critics hailed it as a return to form after the more experimental previous album. Produced by Converge’s Kurt Ballou, their 2015 self-titled record doubled down on raw instrumentation and energy. The band recorded it mostly live, with minimal studio polish. Dan O’Connor described it as “just us playing—no fancy computer stuff.” Singles like “We All Float Down Here” and “Eating My Words” captured their balance of grit and melody perfectly.

Rise or Die Trying 10th Anniversary and Later Projects (2017-2019)

In 2017, Four Year Strong celebrated the 10th anniversary of Rise or Die Trying with a world tour where they performed the album in full each night. The nostalgia trip reaffirmed their loyal fanbase, many of whom had grown up alongside the band. That same year, they released Some of You Will Like This, Some of You Won’t, a compilation of re-recorded classics, acoustic versions, and deep cuts. The album’s title summed up their self-awareness perfectly. They also performed on the final Vans Warped Tour in 2018, closing a chapter for both the band and the festival that helped launch them.

Brain Pain and Enemy of the World Revisited (2020-2023)

In early 2020, Four Year Strong announced Brain Pain, their first full-length album in five years. Released on February 28, it marked a creative balance between aggression and melody, featuring standout singles “Talking Myself in Circles” and “Brain Pain.” Two years later, they joined State Champs for the song “Sundress” on Kings of the New Age and released a Green Day cover (“Brain Stew / Jaded”) on Pure Noise’s Dead Formats, Vol. 1. That same year, they opened for New Found Glory’s Sticks and Stones 20th Anniversary Tour. In 2022, they re-recorded Enemy of the World for its 12th anniversary, giving the album a modern production update without losing its punch.

Analysis Paralysis and the Present Day (2023-Present)

In late 2023, Four Year Strong began teasing new material, starting with the singles “Dead End Friend” and “Daddy of Mine.” Their eighth studio album, Analysis Paralysis, arrived on August 9, 2024, via Pure Noise Records. Songs like “Uncooked” showed the band’s ability to evolve without losing the energy that defined their early work. After more than two decades, Four Year Strong continues to thrive on authenticity and relentless touring, maintaining their place as one of pop-punk’s most consistent bands.
