Hagfish
Hagfish was an American rock band from Sherman, Texas, that gained notoriety through performances in the Deep Ellum district of Dallas, Texas. The band drew influence from both punk rock and alternative rock, and its core lineup consisted of lead vocalist George Stroud Reagan III, guitarist Zach Blair, bassist Doni Blair, and drummer Tony Barsotti. Formed in 1991 by the Blair brothers, Hagfish became part of the 1990s Dallas/Fort Worth alternative rock scene alongside bands like Tripping Daisy and Toadies.
History
Formation, Early Years, and Buick Men (1991–1994)
Hagfish was formed by brothers Zach and Doni Blair in Dallas, Texas, in 1991, alongside drummer Banning Lyon. After some lineup changes and the addition of frontman George Stroud Reagan III, the band began performing locally, opening for acts like All, Swervedriver, and Poster Children. The band’s debut album, Buick Men, was released in 1993, marking their official entrance into the alternative rock and punk scenes.
Rocks Your Lame Ass and Touring (1995–1997)
In 1995, Hagfish signed to London Records and released their most successful album, Rocks Your Lame Ass, produced by Bill Stevenson and Stephen Egerton of Descendents/All fame. The album included several re-recorded tracks from Buick Men and gained attention with singles “Stamp” and “Happiness.” Despite touring extensively with acts like Bad Brains, NOFX, and The Offspring, commercial success remained elusive, and the band was eventually dropped by their label after disagreements over the follow-up album.
Hagfish, Coldfront Releases, and Breakup (1998–2001)
After being dropped by London Records, Hagfish returned to the studio with Stevenson and Egerton to record their self-titled third album, Hagfish, released in 1998 on Honest Don’s Records. Despite positive reviews and support from tours, the band eventually slowed down their activity and disbanded in 2001.
Reunions and Post-Breakup (2003–Present)
Hagfish has reunited for occasional performances over the years, with notable appearances in 2003, 2006, and more recent shows. Since the breakup, the Blair brothers have played in various bands, including Only Crime and Rise Against, while George Reagan and Tony Barsotti pursued other projects. The band remains beloved by fans for its contributions to the Dallas punk rock scene.
