Jimmy Eat World

Jimmy Eat World formed in Mesa in 1993

Jimmy Eat World is an American rock band that started in Mesa, Arizona, in 1993 and grew from local DIY beginnings into a long-running group with a deep catalog and steady touring life.

The core lineup is Jim Adkins on lead vocals and lead guitar, Tom Linton on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Rick Burch on bass, and Zach Lind on drums. They have released ten studio albums, with the current lineup appearing on all but the first.

Starting Out in Mesa and the Band Name

Adkins and Lind had known each other since preschool. In 1993 they joined up with Linton and bassist Mitchel Porter, leaning early toward punk-leaning rock and building momentum through a demo in 1993 and the EP One, Two, Three, Four in 1994.

The self-titled album Jimmy Eat World arrived in 1994, with Linton handling most of the lead vocals at the time. Over the next couple of years, the band put out additional singles and a full-length on local label Wooden Blue Records.

The band name came from a crayon drawing tied to an argument between Linton’s younger brothers, Jim and Ed. Ed drew a picture of Jim shoving the Earth into his mouth and wrote “Jimmy eat world” under it.

Static Prevails and a Lineup Change

As the band kept writing and playing, they began shifting toward slower sections, longer arrangements, and more contrast within songs. That period brought them into contact with other groups working in a similar direction, and attention around their releases and touring led to a deal with Capitol Records in the mid-1990s.

Before signing, bassist Mitchel Porter left, and Rick Burch joined on bass. For the major-label debut Static Prevails (1996), the band worked with Mark Trombino, along with Wes Kidd, and released early singles including “Call It in the Air” and “Rockstar.”

During these years, the band also released split singles and other small releases through independent labels alongside other bands.

Clarity and a New Center of Gravity

After Static Prevails, the band felt frustrated with the business side of their label situation, even as Capitol still wanted another album. From late 1998 into early 1999, the band recorded Clarity across multiple studios in the Los Angeles area, with both the band and Trombino producing, and Trombino handling mixing.

Clarity also marked a clearer shift toward Adkins as the primary lead vocalist, with Linton focusing more on guitar. The album included “Lucky Denver Mint,” and a radio remix of that track appeared in the film Never Been Kissed. The closing track “Goodbye Sky Harbor” was written with John Irving’s A Prayer for Owen Meany in mind.

Bleed American and the Breakthrough Years

For the next record, the band planned to work without label backing at first, using touring and day jobs to fund sessions. They again teamed up with Trombino, who agreed to delay payment until after the album came out, helping keep the budget manageable.

The finished album, Bleed American, was released in 2001 after the band signed with DreamWorks Records. Singles from the album charted strongly, with “The Middle” reaching number one on the Alternative Songs chart and climbing into the Billboard Hot 100 top five.

After the September 11 attacks, the band reissued the album under the title Jimmy Eat World for a period, concerned the original name could be misunderstood. The album later returned to its original title, including a deluxe edition in 2008 with bonus material.

Futures, Label Changes, and a New Producer

The follow-up, Futures (2004), began with Trombino again, but the band decided they needed more time to write, and the collaboration ended early. Producer Gil Norton came in, and the band finished the album with songs including “Pain,” which reached number one on the Alternative Songs chart.

Around that time, DreamWorks Records was absorbed into Universal Music Group, the label was shut down, and the band was reassigned within Universal’s label system.

Chase This Light Through Surviving

For Chase This Light (2007), the band self-produced with help from co-producers Chris Testa and John Fields, with Butch Vig as executive producer. The album became their highest-charting release, peaking at number five on the Billboard 200.

Later studio albums included Invented (2010), which featured a track with Linton on lead vocals for the first time since Clarity, followed by Damage (2013), Integrity Blues (2016), and Surviving (2019).

2010s and 2020s Activity, Singles, and Touring

In 2014, the band marked the 10-year anniversary of Futures with special touring and vinyl reissues tied to earlier albums. In 2016, renewed attention came when an Apple Music ad featured Taylor Swift using “The Middle,” which helped push the song back into heavy rotation for a new wave of listeners.

After Surviving, touring slowed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The band later focused on the online “Phoenix Sessions,” performing full-album sets from Surviving, Futures, and Clarity.

In 2022, they released the independent single “Something Loud,” followed by additional non-album tracks such as “Place Your Debts.” In 2023, they announced a North American co-headlining tour with Manchester Orchestra and released a cover of Manchester Orchestra’s “Telepath,” while Manchester Orchestra covered Jimmy Eat World’s “Table for Glasses.”
