A Global Threat

A Global Threat

A Global Threat, often abbreviated as AGT, was a punk rock band from Bangor, Maine, formed in 1997. Over the course of their career, they released four full-length albums and numerous 7-inch EPs, becoming known for their aggressive street punk style. The band was active until 2007, during which time they toured extensively across the United States, leaving a significant mark on the punk rock landscape.

History

1997–2000: Formation and Early Years

AGT was formed in 1997 in Maine by Bryan Lothian, Brett Threat, Westie, and Tubby Tim. The band relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1998, where they remained based until their breakup. Their first EP, “The Kids Will Revolt Against All Authority,” was self-released on Crack Rock Records in 1998. The lineup soon expanded with the addition of Mike Graves on drums and Petrov Curtis on guitar. The band began performing live shows in Boston and New York, gaining traction in the local punk scene.

In 1999, AGT released the “What the Fuck Will Change?” EP and a split 7-inch with Broken, further developing their raw and relentless sound. The “What the Fuck Will Change?” EP was later expanded into their first full-length LP by Step-1 Music. The band also embarked on a U.S. tour, though it was cut short by a car accident in Texas. By the end of the year, the band had signed with GMM Records, though internal tensions led to lineup changes, with original members Brett and Johnny departing to form the band USA Waste.

2000–2007: Growth and Final Years

AGT continued to evolve, recording the “In The Red” EP in 2000 and releasing their second full-length album, “Until We Die,” on GMM Records. They embarked on a national tour, sharing stages with bands like Awkward Thought and The Casualties. However, more lineup changes followed, with Gabe Crate being fired and the band continuing as a three-piece for a time. John Curran later joined as bassist, solidifying the lineup for the recording of their third album, “Here We Are,” released on Punkcore Records in 2002.

As the band moved forward, they faced more internal strife and lineup changes, but continued to tour and release music. In 2006, AGT recorded their final album, “Where the Sun Never Sets,” on BYO Records. This album is often regarded as their most complex and innovative work, showcasing their growth as musicians while maintaining their political and aggressive edge.

AGT’s final years saw them touring extensively across the U.S. and Canada, including tours with Strike Anywhere, the Subhumans, and other notable punk bands. However, by November 2007, the band officially announced their breakup, citing creative differences and personal challenges as contributing factors.

2011: Reissue

In 2011, it was announced that AGT’s long-out-of-print album “Until We Die” would be reissued on CD and vinyl by Jailhouse/Sixty Nine Apple Records, allowing a new generation of punk fans to discover the band’s influential work.
