AgainST (stylized as “Against”) was an American crossover thrash band formed in 2006. The band emerged as part of the “Welcome 2 Venice” compilation project and brought together members from iconic Venice, California punk and thrash bands. This collaboration featured Dan Clements (of Excel), Grant Estes, Louiche Mayorga, Amery Smith (all original members of Suicidal Tendencies), and Kevin Guercio (former vocalist of No Mercy). Although their time together was brief, AgainST made a significant impact on the Venice thrash scene, contributing to the ongoing legacy of the Venice crossover thrash movement that began in the 1980s.

History

In 2006, Louiche Mayorga, a founding member of Suicidal Tendencies, initiated the project “Welcome 2 Venice,” a compilation album that showcased bands from Venice, California. This album was conceived as a follow-up to the original “Welcome to Venice” compilation released in 1985, which had featured tracks by pioneering bands like Suicidal Tendencies and Excel.

Mayorga’s project quickly evolved into something larger when he reconnected with former bandmates Grant Estes and Amery Smith, who were eager to participate. Dan Clements, the founding member and frontman of Excel, joined the project after Mayorga sent him some demo tapes. The lineup was completed with the addition of Kevin Guercio, former No Mercy vocalist, who served as a second vocalist for the group. The newly formed band decided on the name AgainST.

Live Performances and Recordings

In May 2006, AgainST performed two benefit shows at The Good Hurt Club in Venice, California, to help fund the release of the “Welcome 2 Venice” compilation. These performances were well-received and established the band’s reputation as a formidable live act within the crossover thrash scene.

When it came time to record tracks for the compilation, AgainST contributed two songs: “Camarillo” (with Dan Clements on vocals) and “Roll the Dice” (featuring Kevin Guercio on vocals). The entire process of recording, releasing, and distributing the album was managed by Mayorga’s independent label, Built on an Ounce.

Following the release of “Welcome 2 Venice,” rumors circulated about a possible Excel reunion. However, Clements clarified that he had no plans to reform Excel and wanted to ensure that AgainST was recognized as a distinct entity, separate from his previous band.
