Carpathian
Carpathian were an Australian hardcore band formed in Melbourne in 2003. Known for evolving from metalcore to melodic hardcore, the band released several acclaimed albums, toured extensively across Australia and internationally, and left a mark on the hardcore scene with their emotive performances.
History
Formation and Early Years
Carpathian formed in Melbourne in 2003, featuring vocalist Martin Kirby, guitarists Josh Manitta and Lloyd Carroll, bass guitarist Ed Redcliff, and drummer David “Skan” Bichard. The band attracted both straight edge and non-straight edge members. They initially emerged as a metalcore outfit but soon honed a melodic hardcore style.
Musical Evolution and Influence
Starting out as a metalcore band, Carpathian shifted towards melodic hardcore by their second album, Isolation. This album showcased the influence of legendary UK post-punk band Joy Division, which is evident in track titles and covers used in their later work. The band’s lyrical themes and evolving sound resonated with fans, and Isolation reached No. 19 on the ARIA Charts, marking a high point in their career.
Lineup Changes and Touring
Throughout their active years, Carpathian underwent numerous lineup changes. Guitarists Anthony Harris and Julian Marsh departed due to demanding touring schedules, and vocalist Michael Crafter briefly joined in 2006 before leaving in 2007. Kirby’s consistent role in songwriting provided stability despite these shifts. The band played at major festivals such as Taste of Chaos and Soundwave, and toured with notable bands like Atreyu, Have Heart, and Parkway Drive, expanding their international presence.
Later Years and Disbandment
In 2011, Carpathian announced they would disband indefinitely, with their final show taking place in Melbourne on April 29, 2011. After disbanding, frontman Martin Kirby expressed interest in a potential reunion, though he acknowledged that reformation seemed unlikely given the members’ diverging paths.
