Catch 22

This New Jersey-based ska punk band blends brass and punk energy

Catch 22 is an American ska punk band from East Brunswick Township, New Jersey. Formed in 1996, the group quickly gained attention with their energetic brass section and catchy melodies, significantly impacting the third-wave ska scene.

Biography

The band was founded by guitarist/vocalist Tomas Kalnoky and drummer Chris Greer, who recruited trumpeter Kevin Gunther, bassist Josh Ansley, saxophonist Ryan Eldred, and trombonist James Egan. Their early work, including the self-produced demo tape Rules of the Game, sold out quickly and led to a contract with Victory Records.

Early Releases and Lineup Changes

Catch 22 released their debut studio album Keasbey Nights in 1998, which became one of the most recognized albums in the ska punk genre. After founding member Tomas Kalnoky left to form Streetlight Manifesto, the band underwent lineup changes but continued to build on their signature sound with contributions from remaining and new members.

Evolution and Musical Style

Initially known for a traditional ska punk style, Catch 22 evolved over time. After Kalnoky’s departure, the band shifted towards a more punk rock sound, retaining ska elements while incorporating vocal harmonies and diverse influences. Albums like Alone in a Crowd and Dinosaur Sounds saw experimentation beyond pure ska punk, reflecting changes in lineup and musical direction.

Recent Activity

Over the years, Catch 22 has continued to tour, release albums, and adapt their lineup. Their fourth studio album, Permanent Revolution (2006), returned closer to their ska roots with concept themes. The band remains active, performing shows and working on new material, celebrating over two decades of music.
