Code Orange

American metalcore innovators from Pittsburgh

Code Orange is an American metalcore band that formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 2008 while its members were still in high school. The band currently consists of vocalist Jami Morgan, guitarist/vocalist Reba Meyers, keyboardist/programmer/guitarist/vocalist/visual artist Eric “Shade” Balderose, bassist Joe Goldman, guitarist Dominic Landolina, and drummer Max Portnoy.

History

The band originally formed under the name “Code Orange Kids” in 2008, playing straightforward hardcore punk before evolving into a heavier metalcore sound. Early self-published demos and the EP Cycles helped them gain traction despite touring challenges due to their young age. In January 2012, they signed to Deathwish Inc. and released their debut full-length album, Love Is Love/Return to Dust, recorded with Kurt Ballou of Converge.

Following extensive touring in North America and Europe; including a split EP with Full of Hell;l the band changed its name to “Code Orange” in June 2014. That same year, they recorded their second album, I Am King, produced with renewed ambition and a refined sound. Their touring schedule expanded with high-profile support tours and festival appearances.

In April 2016, Code Orange signed with Roadrunner Records and released their third album, Forever, in January 2017, which garnered critical acclaim and featured aggressive, experimental tracks. Their fourth album, Underneath, was released in March 2020 amid the pandemic, accompanied by a live-streamed release concert and innovative production elements.

The band’s most recent album, The Above, was released on September 29, 2023. In early 2024, they had to cancel upcoming tour dates due to health challenges faced by guitarist Dominic Landolina, but continue to make an impact with their evolving sound and energetic performances.

Musical Style and Influences

Code Orange’s sound has evolved from its punk roots to embrace metalcore, while incorporating elements of grunge, nu metal, electronica, and industrial. Critics have noted their ability to merge the intensity of hardcore with the melody of alternative rock. Their influences range from classic hardcore bands like Black Flag and Converge to electronic pioneers such as Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode.
