From Ashes Rise
From Ashes Rise is a hardcore band from Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 1997 by drummer Dave Atchison and guitarist Brad Boatright. Known for combining ferocious D-beat energy with dark, melodic guitar work, the band became a cornerstone of the neo-crust sound that bridged hardcore punk’s raw aggression with apocalyptic atmosphere. Over the years, they’ve shared DNA with other heavy hitters like His Hero Is Gone and Tragedy, helping define a distinctly American take on crust that felt both chaotic and calculated.
How The Band Got Started
From Ashes Rise took shape in early 1997 when Atchison and Boatright began writing songs that fused the intensity of Scandinavian hardcore with the bleak tones of crust punk. The early lineup included guitarist Jeff Andrews, bassist Jason Piercey, and vocalist Marshall Perdue. That five-piece setup toured the eastern U.S. before Wilkerson replaced Andrews and Boatright took on shared vocal duties. In 1998, they released their first EP, Fragments of a Fallen Sky, through Clean Plate Records—a release that hinted at the dissonant, anthemic style they’d soon refine.
Building the Sound: 1998-2001
The group quickly became known for dense, low-end-heavy riffs that felt both militaristic and mournful. Their follow-up EP, Life and Death (1999), came out on bassist Billy Davis’s label, Partners In Crime Records. When Davis departed, Ryan Teetzen of Burned Up Bled Dry joined and played on the band’s first two LPs: Concrete & Steel and Silence, both released through Feral Ward Records. These albums helped solidify the band’s reputation for dark, relentless hardcore—songs that sounded like the world collapsing in rhythm. By the time they relocated to Portland, Oregon, they were touring with fellow heavyweights like Tragedy and enriching a scene that was quickly becoming legendary for its bleak power.
Nightmares and Recognition
In 2003, From Ashes Rise released Nightmares on Jade Tree, an unlikely label for a crust band but one that gave their sound broader exposure. The record combined haunting melodies with razor-sharp D-beat precision, and its production clarity made it one of the most accessible entries in their discography without losing the grit that defined them. Around this time, Davis returned on bass for a stint, contributing to their split release with Sweden’s Victims on Havoc Records. The group’s 2004 tours across North America and Europe brought them further acclaim before Davis once again left and Derek Willman stepped in on bass.
The relentless touring schedule and the emotional toll of the material caught up with the band, leading to their initial split in 2005 after a final tour with the Subhumans. For fans of underground hardcore, their dissolution felt like the closing of a chapter in modern crust history.
Reunion and Revival
In 2009, rumors spread that From Ashes Rise would return for a one-off show. That reunion took place in 2010 at Portland’s Satyricon, drawing a packed crowd of longtime fans and new converts. The comeback wasn’t fleeting—shortly after, they released Live Hell on Jade Tree, a blistering live record capturing the ferocity of their return. They played major festivals including Maryland Deathfest and Punk Illegal in Sweden, proving they could still dominate any stage they stepped on.
By 2012, they recorded two new tracks, “Rejoice the End” and “Rage of Sanity,” for a 7-inch on Southern Lord Records, both songs echoing the apocalyptic grit of their best work. Around the same time, guitarist Brad Boatright launched Audiosiege Media, a label and mastering studio that would go on to handle releases for countless modern hardcore and metal bands, further cementing his influence on heavy music.

The Story After The Noise
From Ashes Rise built a sound that managed to feel both colossal and human—a soundtrack for end times that somehow offered catharsis instead of despair. Their mix of bleak melody and hardcore brutality set a standard for crust-inspired punk that bands still chase today. Whether roaring through clubs in the early 2000s or returning decades later to the same fire, From Ashes Rise have proven that darkness and purpose can coexist in the heaviest of ways.
