A Change of Pace is a pop punk band originating from Peoria, Arizona, formed in 2001. The band, known for their dynamic mix of melodic tunes and energetic performances, first gained attention during their high school years. Over the course of their career, they were featured on the 2005 and 2006 Warped Tours and became known for their ability to blend elements of punk, alternative rock, and pop.

Biography

Early Years and Formation

A Change of Pace was formed in 2001 when vocalist Torry Jasper and drummer Jonathan Kelly began collaborating during their freshman year at Centennial High School. In 2003, after playing small local shows, they were joined by bassist Johnny Abdullah and guitarist Adam Rodgers. The band caught the attention of manager Jorge Hernandez, and by August 2004, they had signed with Immortal Records, releasing their debut EP, “Change Is The Only Constant.”

Rise to Popularity

In 2005, A Change of Pace released their first full-length album, “An Offer You Can’t Refuse,” which earned them a spot on the Warped Tour. They continued to build their following with their second album, “Prepare the Masses,” released in 2006. During this period, they added a fifth member, Dan Parker, and went on tour with bands like Roses Are Red. The band also embarked on several tours across the US, including the Myspace Fall Tour in 2005 and tours with Quietdrive, the Classic Crime, and Paulson in 2007.

Lineup Changes and Final Album

In June 2008, the band announced the departure of vocalist Torry Jasper and introduced Micah Bentley as their new lead singer. This lineup shift brought a lighter tone to their music, marking a departure from the heavier, scream-infused style of their earlier work. They released an EP titled “Just No Better Way” with Bentley and continued to tour. Their third and final album, “It Could Be Worse,” was released on February 22, 2011.

Breakup and Reunions

On March 13, 2011, drummer Jon Kelley announced via Facebook that A Change of Pace would be disbanding after ten years. Their farewell show took place on April 22, 2011, at The Clubhouse in Tempe, Arizona. However, the band reunited later that year for a performance at the ‘South By So What’ festival in Dallas, Texas, with original vocalist Torry Jasper. Although they discussed recording a new album, it never materialized.

10th Anniversary Shows and Second Breakup

In May 2016, A Change of Pace announced two concerts to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their album “Prepare the Masses.” These shows took place in July and August of 2016 in Phoenix, Arizona, and Anaheim, California. The Anaheim show was announced as the band’s final performance.

Second Reunion

In February 2019, A Change of Pace teased fans with a cryptic date on social media, later revealing that they would be headlining the first “Pop Punk Nite” at The Van Buren in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 22.

Post-Breakup Activities

Following the band’s breakup, members pursued various paths. Micah Bentley focused on his solo project, “Micah and His Friend.” Jonathan Kelley completed medical school and is currently working in emergency medicine. Torry Jasper formed a new band called “Video Head System,” and Dan Parker became a record producer. Johnny Abdullah relocated to Wenatchee, Washington, and started a family.

Style and Influences

A Change of Pace drew inspiration from a wide range of musical influences, from classic bands like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin to modern acts like Third Eye Blind. Their sound has been described as an explosive blend of pop punk, alternative rock, and elements of post-hardcore, screamo, and melodic hardcore. They were known for their catchy melodies, powerful guitar riffs, and dynamic vocals, which evolved over the years to incorporate a broader array of styles.
