Basement

Basement is an English rock band formed in Ipswich, Suffolk, in 2009. Known for their emotive and energetic style, the band quickly made a name for themselves in the alternative rock and post-hardcore scenes. Their discography includes several studio albums, EPs, and notable tours, and they have garnered international attention for their heartfelt performances and evolving sound.

Formation and Early Years (2009–2012)

Formed in September 2009 by former members of the pop punk band In This for Fun, Basement emerged with the release of their debut EP Songs About the Weather in May 2010. Signing to Run for Cover Records that August, they rapidly gained traction within the punk community. Their first full-length album, I Wish I Could Stay Here (2011), was released through Run for Cover and earned praise for its raw emotion and melodic undertones.

Breakthrough with Colourmeinkindness and Hiatus (2012)

The follow-up album Colourmeinkindness was released in 2012, marking a significant milestone as it charted on the US Billboard Top 200. After extensive touring to support the album, the band announced a hiatus in 2012 due to personal commitments and career pursuits of its members.

Reunion and Continued Activity (2014–Present)

In 2014, Basement reunited and released the EP Further Sky, which signaled their return to the music scene. The band continued to evolve, and in 2016 they released Promise Everything, which charted in Australia, the UK, and the US, affirming their global appeal. Their fourth studio album, Beside Myself, followed in October 2018, further showcasing their growth and resilience as a band.

Musical Style and Influences

Basement’s sound has been described as alternative rock, emo, post-hardcore, and soft grunge. Their earlier work, including Songs About the Weather and I Wish I Could Stay Here, carried a pop punk and emo vibe, while later releases like Colourmeinkindness and Promise Everything expanded into a broader rock sound with post-hardcore elements. The band cites influences from acts such as the Ataris, The Promise Ring, Mineral, Braid, Smoking Popes, Jets to Brazil, Jimmy Eat World, and Piebald, which can be heard in their dynamic guitar work, heartfelt lyrics, and evolving soundscapes.
