Better Luck Next Time

Better Luck Next Time is a four-piece pop-punk band originating from Los Angeles, California, United States. Since their formation in 2003, the band has released four albums and one split EP, earning recognition for their energetic brand of pop-punk music.

History

Formation (2003-2005)

The band was forged in 2003 by original members Brian Bortoli, Matt Fuzzo, Chris Lucas, and Leston Derrick. Their musical style shifted when Brian joined Snapout, prompting the evolution of the band into Better Luck Next Time. Initially, both Leston and Brian shared lead vocal duties. Their first demo, recorded shortly after formation, laid the groundwork for their debut album, Third Time’s A Charm.

Third Time’s A Charm (2005-2006)

The band transformed their accumulated material into their debut album, Third Time’s A Charm. After recording, they underwent lineup changes, eventually leading to Brian taking the sole lead vocalist role. The album was initially self-released but gained international attention when re-released by InYa Face Records in Japan. This launch propelled their first tour in Japan and a remarkable chart position.

Start From Skratch (2007-2008)

Building on the success of their debut, Better Luck Next Time entered the studio again to craft their second album, Start From Skratch. This album’s release in Japan led to an invitation to play at Japan’s esteemed Punkspring Festival. The band further toured Japan with the Mad Caddies. Their international recognition drew attention in the American market, leading to a signing with World Records.

Hybrid (2008)

The band collaborated with the Italian pop-punk group Melody Fall for a split EP titled Hybrid. This project, consisting of eight songs, further solidified their popularity in Japan.

A Lifetime of Learning (2009-2011)

Their third album, A Lifetime Of Learning, showcased a shift back to a four-piece lineup. However, health issues forced the band to cancel tours in support of the album’s release. Despite delays in its nationwide release, the album eventually hit shelves in the US, containing pre-production tracks and demos.

We’ll Take It From Here (2011-present)

After struggles and changes, including the addition of lead guitarist Travis Garrecht, the band worked on their fourth album. The album, titled We’ll Take it From Here, marked a return to their DIY roots, with the band handling recording and production. The album’s release in both Japan and the US signified a personal journey for Brian, reflecting his struggles during its production.
