Bickley

Houston punk icons known for raw sound and adult-themed lyrics

Bickley was a notable American punk rock band hailing from Houston, Texas, active primarily from 1995 until 2001. Taking their name from Travis Bickle, Robert De Niro’s character in Taxi Driver, the band was known for a simple yet powerful sound influenced by acts like The Vindictives, The Queers, and Screeching Weasel.

Musical Journey

Bickley released their first full-length studio album, Pogo Au Go-Go, in 1996 on PaperDoll Records. The local buzz in Houston grew quickly, and by 1998 they caught the attention of Fearless Records, which re-released Pogo Au Go-Go. Later that year, they followed up with their second album, Kiss The Bunny, further cementing their presence in the punk scene. Their touring schedule expanded as their fan base grew across the Southwest and beyond, performing shows along the West and East Coasts as well as in the Deep South.

Signature Style and Releases

Bickley stood out not only for their catchy yet gritty sound but also for the distinctive vocal character of lead singer Ben Fondled. Their music often contained adult themes, setting them apart in the punk community. Their final studio release, Fat, Drunk and Stupid (2001), captured the energy of their live shows at Houston’s Fitzgerald’s, released through PaperDoll Records.

Band Lineup and Changes

The core lineup that took the band to new heights during their period with Fearless Records remained stable: Ben Fondled on vocals, Uncle Dig on guitar, and Dave Wreckoning on drums. Between 1998 and 2001, they rotated bass players, primarily Rubio Coconut and Bill Fool, due to touring commitments. Earlier, Matte Finish served as the original drummer on early releases and some tracks on Kiss The Bunny.

Breakup and Reunions

At the height of their popularity in 2001, Bickley disbanded, with members citing personal reasons and the need to focus on family life. Despite the split, the band has reunited several times for special events. Notably, they came together on July 20, 2013, at Fitzgerald’s in Houston for 30footFALL’s 20th anniversary show, re-released early material on vinyl, and issued a greatest hits album titled Good To See You Again, Asshole!. Subsequent reunions occurred in 2015 and 2018 for various commemorations and tribute shows.

Recent Activities

In January 2023, Bickley returned to the stage at The Black Magic Social Club in Houston for the “You Ain’t Punk” show. This performance marked a lineup change with Uncle Dig taking over lead vocals and Greg Urgitate joining as second guitarist. The show reflected both a nod to their roots and an evolution in their sound.
