Break Even
Break Even was an Australian hardcore punk band originating from Perth, formed in 2005. The band became known for their intense performances and a positive, uplifting message despite the aggressive genre.
History
Formation and Early Releases
Break Even formed in Perth in 2005 with Mark Bawden on lead vocals, Simon Dreja on drums, Ash Pederick on guitar, Steffen Sciuto on bass, and Rowan Willoughby on lead guitar. Their early work included the five-track EP Young at Heart (2006), released on Common Bond Records. As lineup changes occurred, Perri Basile joined on bass while Sciuto transitioned to guitar, solidifying the band’s core sound.
Debut Album: The Bright Side
Following the tragic death of original guitarist Rowan Willoughby in November 2008, Break Even pressed on. They recorded their debut album The Bright Side in March 2009 at Perth’s Reading Room Studios. Released in June 2009, the album peaked at number 78 on the ARIA Albums Chart and was praised for its well-crafted hardcore sound infused with atmospheric passages and positive messages.
Touring and Reception
To promote The Bright Side, Break Even embarked on a national tour in October 2009. Critics lauded the album for its mix of hard-hitting music and hopeful themes, setting the band apart in the hardcore scene.
Breakup and Hiatus
On February 23, 2012, Break Even announced their breakup via a heartfelt message on Facebook, citing increasing personal commitments. They completed a final national tour as part of the Soundwave Festival in early 2012 before disbanding later that year.
Reformation and Final Activities
In December 2014, Break Even announced a reunion, planning a UK tour for February 2015 and releasing a new song titled “Young & Bright.” They expressed gratitude towards their fans and hinted at a future record release.
