Breakdown is a pioneering American hardcore band formed in Yonkers, New York, in late 1986. Emerging from the mid-’80s New York hardcore scene, they helped define the “tough guy” hardcore sound with a metallic edge and tongue-in-cheek lyrical style.

History

Formation and Early Years

Founded in 1986, Breakdown diverged from the typical Lower East Side crew mentality, opting for a more metallic and gritty sound reminiscent of Sheer Terror. Despite rapid lineup changes; with singer Jeff Perlin remaining as the only constant member; the band quickly became a fixture in the hardcore scene.

Touring and Mid-Career

Throughout their career, Breakdown rarely toured the U.S., focusing their efforts on the Northeast, Canada, Europe, and Japan. They played key festivals such as the Built to Last Festival and notable gigs, including returns to iconic venues like Webster Hall alongside Sheer Terror in 2010.

Hiatus and Reunion

After a period of inactivity and rumors about recording new material which did not materialize, the original 1986 lineup reformed in February 2012. This reunion brought together vocalist Jeff Perlin, guitarists Carl Porcaro and Don Angelilli, bassist Rich McLoughlin, and drummer Anthony Drago, marking the first time in 25 years they performed together.

Releases and Legacy

Breakdown released a series of demo tapes and EPs in the late ’80s and early ’90s, including the notable EP Blacklisted and albums like Plus Minus and Battle Hymns for an Angry Planet. Their material has since been reissued and bootlegged, cementing their legacy in hardcore music history.
