Fleshies
Fleshies is a punk rock band from Oakland, California, known for their chaotic live shows, politically charged lyrics, and long-standing involvement in the Bay Area punk scene. Formed in the late 1990s, the band built a reputation for wild performances, humor, and a relentless DIY ethic. Their sound combines raw punk energy with a sense of theatricality and satire, setting them apart from many of their contemporaries.
How The Band Got Started
Fleshies began in 1999 and quickly became a regular fixture in the East Bay’s underground punk circuit. They were heavily involved in community events like Geekfest, a series of free, all-ages shows that showcased independent and politically active punk bands. The group’s early releases, including Arbgabdo, Baby! and their self-titled demo known as The Baby, set the tone for their explosive live energy and socially conscious lyrics.
Rise Through Alternative Tentacles
Fleshies gained wider attention after signing with Jello Biafra’s label, Alternative Tentacles. Their 2001 album Kill The Dreamer’s Dream established them as a major force in underground punk, blending humor and anger with political messaging. The follow-up records The Sicilian (2003) and Scrape the Walls (2006) continued their streak of unpredictable and intense songwriting. During this time, the band became known for its unfiltered live performances and outspoken left-wing commentary.
Constant Touring and Side Projects
From 1999 through 2006, Fleshies maintained a demanding tour schedule, playing across North America and Europe. Their performances often mixed absurd comedy, physical antics, and blistering punk. Members of Fleshies were also involved in numerous side projects, including Triclops!, Harbinger, Street Eaters, Meercaz and the Visions, and Pins of Light, showing the group’s deep roots in the Bay Area’s experimental punk scene.
Later Years and Return
In 2009, Fleshies released Brown Flag through Recess Records, keeping their aggressive and humorous edge intact. After a long break, they returned in 2019 with Introducing The Fleshies on Dirt Cult Records — their first album in a decade. The record marked a confident return, showing that their ferocity and irreverent spirit hadn’t faded with time.
