Grayscale
Grayscale are a rock band from Philadelphia that built their reputation on heart, honesty, and persistence. Mixing pop-punk’s energy with alternative rock’s emotional pull, they’ve spent over a decade turning life’s sharp turns into songs that hit like open letters. From their early days in the Philly DIY circuit to headlining international tours, Grayscale’s story is one of constant growth and fearless self-discovery.
How The Band Got Started
Grayscale formed in 2011 when vocalist Collin Walsh, guitarist Andrew Kyne, rhythm guitarist Dallas Molster, bassist Derek Parker, and drummer Nick Veno started playing in Philadelphia’s tight-knit pop-punk scene. The group began cutting their teeth in local venues, leaning on melody and relatable storytelling rather than theatrics. Their first EP, Leaving, appeared in 2013 and captured a young band refining their voice. By 2015, they released Change, a more confident step that hinted at the emotional depth and atmosphere that would later define them.
Breaking Through with Adornment
In March 2017, Grayscale signed to Fearless Records and dropped their debut single “Atlantic.” It led the way to Adornment, their first full-length album released that April. The record’s sound fused bright melodies with personal lyrics about love, self-worth, and change. Songs like “Beautiful Things” and “Forever Yours” brought the band into a wider spotlight, while their cover of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” for Punk Goes Pop Vol. 7 proved they could balance sincerity with style. Adornment established Grayscale as a new face of modern pop-punk, bridging the gap between high-energy youth and mature reflection.
Nella Vita and the Next Step
After two years of touring, Grayscale returned with Nella Vita in 2019, a record that felt both raw and cinematic. Influenced by artists like Prince, Michael Jackson, and Motown-era grooves, the album introduced a deeper, more soulful side to their songwriting. The singles “Painkiller Weather,” “In Violet,” and “Baby Blue” showcased a richer production and emotional storytelling that resonated with listeners far beyond their pop-punk roots. The band headlined The Nella Vita Tour across the U.S., solidifying their reputation as one of the genre’s most forward-thinking acts. Loudwire later named the album one of the 50 best rock records of 2019.
Expanding Their Sound with Umbra
Released in August 2021, Umbra marked a turning point for Grayscale. Vocalist Collin Walsh called it “the record where we began to truly figure ourselves out,” and that sense of identity shines through on every track. With standout songs like “Live Again,” inspired by Walsh’s father’s illness, the album blended emotional vulnerability with sleek, modern rock production. The band toured heavily behind the record that fall, delivering intense, cathartic live shows that balanced polish and passion. Umbra felt like a graduation into a more expansive sound—one that was still rooted in their beginnings but unafraid of reinvention.
The Hart and Independence
After departing Fearless Records in 2023, Grayscale reemerged with newfound independence and creative freedom. Their 2023 single “Not Afraid to Die” signaled a bold new chapter. The song’s themes of resilience and family reflected their Philadelphia roots and the unshakable grit that has defined them since day one. Through 2024, they followed with singles like “Mum II,” “Summer Clothes,” “Let Go,” and “Kept Me Alive,” all leading to the announcement of their fourth studio album, The Hart, released in 2025. The record channels their evolution—more personal, more confident, and fully self-directed—showing a band that’s no longer chasing a sound but owning it.
Touring and Growth
Grayscale’s reputation as a live act has grown with every album. From their first headlining runs for Nella Vita to their 2021 Umbra tour, they’ve built an audience through connection rather than spectacle. In 2025, they joined Mayday Parade on their 20th anniversary tour before launching their own European run, Live in Colour. Whether playing clubs or festivals, Grayscale’s energy remains rooted in authenticity—a band that feeds off their crowd’s emotion and gives it right back.
