Hogan’s Heroes
Hogan’s Heroes was a hardcore punk band from New Jersey that formed in 1984 and stayed active until 1993. Over the course of their run, the band released three full length albums through California label New Red Archives and became known for fast songs, aggressive delivery, and a steady presence within the American underground.
Early Years and First Recordings
The band formed in the shore area of South Central New Jersey with George Barberio on guitar, Matt Gunvordahl on drums, and Scott Cassidy on vocals. The group briefly operated under the name Impossible Task before bassist John Cuccinello joined and suggested the name Hogan’s Heroes.
In 1985 the band recorded their first demo, Hogan’s Heroes, co produced with local New Jersey producer Merlin. Cuccinello left the band later that year and moved to California, but the group continued playing shows and recorded another demo titled Bomb Guy Demo in December 1985 with bassist Gerry Daseking. Both demos circulated widely through tape trading networks, helping the band gain attention beyond their local area.
By mid 1986 Cuccinello had rejoined the group, while Gunvordahl and Cassidy exited. Later that year Barberio and Cuccinello recorded a new thirteen song session with Tony Scandiffio on drums and Skip Hoefling on vocals. The recording took place at Merlin Studios and was produced by the band alongside Merlin.
Built To Last and Growing Reach
In 1987 Hogan’s Heroes entered Waterfront Studios with engineer Rae Dileo to record material for Built To Last. The sessions leaned heavily into hardcore while also pulling from hard rock, thrash, and metal, giving the songs a heavier edge than their earlier demos.
After an initial label deal fell through, Straight On Records released Built To Last in 1988. The album sold well enough to secure broader distribution through Caroline Records and helped push the band onto a larger national stage.
A New Label and a Self Titled Release
In early 1989 Hogan’s Heroes moved to New Red Archives. The label reissued Built To Last on multiple formats later that year, bringing renewed attention to the record. Shortly afterward, the band signed a two album deal with the label.
Their second studio album, Hogan’s Heroes, was released in 1990. Recorded in 1989 and produced by the band with Ryk Oakley, the album expanded their sound by blending hardcore with punk, thrash, metal, reggae touches, and full band backing vocals. The result was a record that showed a wider range while keeping the speed and intensity intact.
3 Fists and a Mouthful
In 1991 the band signed a new contract with New Red Archives and began work on their third album. 3 Fists and a Mouthful was recorded at Ocean Gate Studios and produced by George Barberio. The album continued to balance hardcore aggression with hard rock structure and metallic riffs.
Released in 1992, the record marked the final full length released during the band’s active years. Hogan’s Heroes broke up in 1993, closing out nearly a decade of steady output and touring.
Sound and Reputation
The band has often been associated with skate oriented hardcore, tying fast tempos and sharp riffs to the energy of that culture. Years later, Razorcake described their music as fast, angry, and still effective long after its original release, noting how well the recordings held up over time.
