I Am The Avalanche

I Am the Avalanche is a punk rock band from Brooklyn

I Am the Avalanche is an American punk rock band from Brooklyn, New York. The band’s name comes from a lyric written by frontman Vinnie Caruana for a song that was eventually discarded. Interestingly, the phrase “I Am the Avalanche” also appears in a poem by Stephen Dobyns, although Caruana maintains that this was purely coincidental.

History

Formation and Debut Album (2004–2005)

Following the breakup of his previous band The Movielife and a brief stint with Head Automatica, Vinnie Caruana formed I Am the Avalanche in 2004. The original lineup included Caruana on vocals, Brett “The Ratt” Romnes on drums, Brandon Swanson on guitar, Michael Ireland on guitar, and Kellen Robson on bass. The band quickly made a name for itself with its powerful live performances, which often featured Caruana playing guitar on certain tracks, adding a heavier edge to their sound.

After spending time touring the UK, I Am the Avalanche released their self-titled debut album on September 27, 2005, through Drive-Thru Records. Produced by Barrett Jones, the album received favorable reviews and helped establish the band in the punk rock scene. They went on to tour extensively, sharing stages with acts such as Bleeding Through, Bayside, No Use for a Name, and Saves the Day.

Avalanche United and Continued Success (2006–2013)

The band continued to build a strong following, particularly after their performances at major festivals like Warped Tour and Soundwave Festival in Australia. During their 2009 Australian tour, the band performed several new songs, hinting at a forthcoming album. However, it wasn’t until October 11, 2011, that they released their highly anticipated second album, Avalanche United. The album, which saw the band moving toward a more melodic punk sound, was met with critical acclaim and solidified their place in the punk rock genre.

During this period, I Am the Avalanche also collaborated with other artists, including Vinnie’s guest vocals on Set Your Goals‘ track “This Will Be the Death of Us.” The band continued to tour, including a stint on the 2012 Warped Tour and performances at the Soundwave Festival in Australia.

Wolverines and Lineup Changes (2014–2020)

In January 2014, I Am the Avalanche announced their third full-length album, Wolverines, which was released on March 17, 2014, through I Surrender Records. The album was produced by drummer Brett “The Ratt” Romnes and mixed by Will Yip. The lead single, “The Shape I’m In,” was premiered on Esquire Magazine’s website, and the album debuted at #108 on the Billboard 200, marking a significant milestone for the band.

Despite the success of Wolverines, the band experienced lineup changes during this time, with guitarist Michael Ireland departing from the group. However, the core members continued to push forward, maintaining their presence in the punk scene.

Dive and Recent Activity (2020–Present)

On November 20, 2020, I Am the Avalanche released their fourth studio album, DIVE, which marked the return of guitarist Michael Ireland to the lineup. The album drew inspiration from a wide range of influences, including Descendents, Seaweed, Jawbreaker, and No Use for a Name. DIVE was well-received by both fans and critics, further cementing the band’s legacy in the punk rock world.
