Kronstadt Uprising

Kronstadt Uprising were an anarcho punk band from Southend-on-Sea

Kronstadt Uprising were an anarcho punk band from Southend-on-Sea, Essex, active during the 1980s, and their short run included early attention from a Crass Records compilation, two EP releases, and a later retrospective collection.

Why they chose the name

The band name was chosen as a tribute to the events of the Kronstadt rebellion.

Early lineup and first recordings

Kronstadt Uprising formed in 1981, started by Steve Pegrum and joined by Spencer Blake, Paul Lawson, and Andy Fisher. In late 1981 they recorded their first demo, and one track was picked up by Crass for volume two of the Bullshit Detector compilation series on Crass Records, which brought the band wider attention.

Becoming a three piece and a brief extra guitarist

In 1982, the band shifted into a three piece with Paul Lawson taking on both guitar and vocal duties. Nick “Filf” Robinson of the Sinyx was also briefly involved, adding extra guitar.

Stylistic shift and the end of the band

During the mid 1980s, the band moved away from its original anarcho punk roots and began bringing in glam rock elements alongside influences from acts such as Johnny Thunders. After a stretch of many lineup changes, the band split up in 1986.

EP releases and the later retrospective

The band released two EPs, The Unknown Revolution on Spiderleg Records and Part of the Game on Dog Rock Records. In November 2000, a 23 track retrospective CD titled Insurrection was released, collecting most of the band’s recordings, including demo material.
