Biography

History

After Aus-Rotten disbanded in late 2000, Dave Trenga and Matt Garabedian launched Behind Enemy Lines. They brought in Bill Chamberlain on guitar and Matt Sachs on bass to form the initial lineup. Later, Mary Bielich and Matt Tuite from the Pittsburgh doom metal band Penance joined to play bass and guitar, respectively. In 2007, guitarist Bill Chamberlain was replaced by Ken Houser, showing the band’s fluid approach to their lineup over time.

Lyrical Themes

The band’s lyrics cover a spectrum of politically charged topics, such as animal rights, environmentalism, human rights, LGBT rights, anti-religion, and anti-capitalism. They are particularly vocal in criticizing the policies of George W. Bush, including issues related to the Iraq War, Abu Ghraib, the Patriot Act, and the response to Hurricane Katrina. Vocalist Dave Trenga has shared essays on his blog and the band’s website, expressing his deep discontent with organized religion in America.
