Brutal Juice

Acid punk band Brutal Juice from Denton

Brutal Juice is an American “acid punk” band from Denton, Texas, known for blending LSD-influenced hardcore punk with progressive rock elements.

History

Formation and Early Years (1990–1997)

Formed in 1990 by singer/guitarist Gordon Gibson and drummer Ben Burt, Brutal Juice emerged from members who previously played in the band Discharge. The early lineup expanded to include classical/jazz-trained guitarist Ted Wood and bassist Sam McCall, who joined after initial lineup changes. Their early releases, including the tape How Tasty Was My Little Timmy?, set the tone for their acid-infused hardcore sound, with Craig Welch soon joining as co-vocalist after starting as a dancer. Over the next two years, they released singles like “Cannibal Holocaust” and “Black Moment Of Panic,” followed by a live album I Love the Way They Scream When They Die in 1994.

Breakthrough and Musical Style

The band’s first studio album, Mutilation Makes Identification Difficult (1995), released on Interscope Records, showcased a complex fusion of punk rock fury with progressive and metal influences. Critics praised the album’s sprawling construction and innovative sound. Despite being dropped by Interscope afterward, Brutal Juice continued to release music and tour, often sharing stages with bands like Toadies, Gwar, and Neurosis.

Post-Breakup and Reunion

After disbanding in 1997, members pursued various projects, with Gibson and Burt forming The Tomorrowpeople, among other ventures by Welch, Wood, and McCall. The band formally reformed in 2012, reigniting local performances and working on new material. Their most recent album, Welcome to the Panopticon (2016), reflects their signature acid-fueled style combined with socio-political commentary.
