Electric Frankenstein
Electric Frankenstein is an American garage punk revival band from New Jersey founded by Sal Canzonieri in 1990, later relocating to North Carolina in 2021. The group blends punk rock, hard rock, garage rock, glam, and heavy metal into a style known as High Energy Rock & Roll in the United States and Action Rock in Europe. The music aims for speed, hooks, and volume, a direct hit for anyone who files riffs under basic life needs.
How The Band Got Started
The band grew out of the breakup of the Thing in 1989. Brothers Sal and Dan Canzonieri developed Electric Frankenstein through 1990 and 1991, with Sal on guitar and Dan on bass. The first lineup included vocalist Frankie Orlandoni, lead guitarist Jim Foster, and drummer John Caton. Within a year, Steve Miller took over as singer and later added lead guitar. When Miller stepped away to record a side project, Scott Wilkins, known for Verbal Abuse and Condemned to Death, handled vocals for two years. Miller then returned on vocals and lead guitar.
Over time, the drum seat rotated, with John Steele and Rob Sefcik alternating for more than a decade. In 2021, the band reformed in North Carolina with Dan and Sal, Wheez Von Klaw on drums from the Irving Klaws, Johnny on vocals, and Jaime Pina on lead guitar, known for work with Chemical People, 45 Grave, Christian Death, and more. By 1995, Electric Frankenstein had a strong New York City following and began national and international touring.
History
Descriptions often compare the band to a collision of AC/DC and the Dead Boys, pairing raw drive with punk urgency. References also include MC5 and the Stooges. The group connected with punk audiences and with listeners who favor heavier, fuzzed-out sounds. In the mid 1990s, Electric Frankenstein toured and recorded with Rik L Rik, covering his songs and creating new material together.
Singles appeared on several independent labels. The first vinyl LP, EF Conquers the World, arrived in 1994. An EP, The Time Is Now, followed in 1995 and also appeared on CD with added tracks from 7-inch singles, effectively serving as the first full-length album. Since then, the catalog has grown past ten albums, often with each release on a different label.
Projects, Compilations, and Books
Sal Canzonieri curated the series A Fistful of Rock & Roll, a multi-volume collection that gathered bands associated with the New Rock Revolution. Thirteen volumes have been issued across labels such as Tee Pee Records, Victory Records, and Steel Cage Records. A second series, A Fistful More of Rock & Roll, continues with over twenty volumes.
The band’s visual history appears in multiple books. Electric Frankenstein, High Energy Punk Rock & Roll Poster Art collects record covers and concert posters by artists including Coop, Kozik, Johnny Ace, Art Chantry, Dirty Donny, and Peter Bagge. A follow-up volume, Son of Electric Frankenstein, More High Energy Rock Art, documents the next decade. A third book, Electric Frankenstein, Illustrated Lyrics from Clover Press and Yoe Books, presents the first 125 songs with art.
Connections and Previous Bands
Guitarist Jim Foster played in Adrenalin O.D. Bassist Dan Canzonieri performed with Shadow Project and Christian Death. Sal Canzonieri spent the 1980s and early 1990s in the Thing, an East Coast NYC noise rock outfit that intersected with the early stoner rock world. The Thing’s live shows at CBGB and the Continental used lights, projections, dancers, and effects, and later inspired White Zombie. The group toured the United Kingdom in 1991 and recorded a John Peel Session for the BBC with producer Dale Griffin of Mott the Hoople, released by Dutch East India Records as part of the Peel Sessions series.
