Fm Static

FM Static is a Toronto rock duo from Thousand Foot Krutch members

FM Static is a Canadian rock duo that came together in Toronto in 2003. The project started as a creative outlet for Thousand Foot Krutch members Trevor McNevan and Steve Augustine. They balanced FM Static alongside their main band, creating something lighter and more melodic, blending pop hooks with punchy guitars. The original lineup also included John Bunner on guitar and Justin Smith on bass before eventually becoming a two-piece outfit.

How The Band Got Started

FM Static began when McNevan and Augustine wanted to try something new outside the heavier tones of Thousand Foot Krutch. Their debut album, What Are You Waiting For?, arrived in 2003 under Tooth & Nail Records. Produced by Aaron Sprinkle, the same producer behind TFK’s Phenomenon, the album carried a bright energy and youthful perspective. It spawned singles like “Definitely Maybe,” “Something to Believe In,” and “Crazy Mary,” which helped FM Static find a dedicated audience. The band toured from 2003 to 2005, though Bunner left after only a few shows and Justin Smith’s brother Jeremy stepped in to help on guitar.

Career Highlights

Their second release, Critically Ashamed (2006), featured the single “Waste of Time.” While the album didn’t see an official tour, songs like “Tonight” and “Moment of Truth” spread organically online. By 2011, those tracks had racked up tens of millions of views on YouTube, showing just how deeply their music connected with fans without heavy promotion.

In 2009, the band released Dear Diary, a concept album telling the story of a teenage boy navigating life, love, and faith. Each song represented a diary entry, and the CD even included illustrations by Worth Dying For guitarist Nathan Parrish. Singles like “Boy Moves to a New Town With an Optimistic Outlook” and “Take Me As I Am” stood out for their relatable storytelling and catchy sound. FM Static toured alongside bands like Jars of Clay and TFK during this time, often supported by guest musicians to fill out their live lineup.

Their fourth album, My Brain Says Stop, But My Heart Says Go! (2011), marked their final release. Tracks like “Last Train Home” and “F.M.S.T.A.T.I.C.” kept the upbeat, sing-along feel that fans had come to expect. The title track even appeared in an episode of the CW series Hellcats. Though the duo never officially announced a breakup, FM Static went quiet after 2011, leaving behind a catalog that captured the early 2000s pop-rock spirit perfectly.

The Story After the Noise

Though FM Static hasn’t released new material since 2011, their songs continue to find new listeners online. Their mix of pop-punk energy and heartfelt lyrics captured a time when Myspace was king and radio hits were sung in car rides with the windows down. It’s the kind of sound that instantly pulls listeners back to the mid-2000s—carefree, catchy, and unapologetically honest.
