Broken Bones
Broken Bones are an English hardcore punk band formed in 1983 by guitarist Anthony “Bones” Roberts. They are known for their fast, metal-influenced hardcore sound that helped shape the crossover thrash genre.
History
Formation and Early Years
Originating from Stoke-on-Trent, England, Broken Bones was founded by Anthony “Bones” Roberts shortly after leaving Discharge in 1983. The original lineup featured his twin brother Terence “Tezz” Roberts on bass, vocalist Nick “Nobby” Dobson, and drummer Darren “Bazz” Burgress. Early releases like the singles “Decapitated” and “Crucifix” set the tone for their aggressive style. As they evolved, lineup changes occurred, with members leaving to join other notable bands such as U.K. Subs and Conflict. Despite these changes, Broken Bones quickly gained recognition for their distinct approach to hardcore.
Evolution and Later Years
Over the years, Broken Bones released several albums and EPs that demonstrated their evolving sound, including a shift towards a more metal-tinged style on releases like Losing Control and Stitched Up. The band experienced periods of inactivity and reformation, with Anthony “Bones” Roberts leading various lineups. In 2001 and 2004, they released albums Without Conscience and Time for Anger, Not Justice, returning to their hardcore roots. Their music has influenced a range of bands in punk, metal, and hardcore scenes, cementing their impact on crossover thrash.
