Creaming Jesus

Creaming Jesus was an English band formed in 1987

Creaming Jesus was an English band formed in 1987, combining elements of gothic rock, punk, and thrash metal. The band’s original lineup featured Andy (vocals), Lil (vocals), Tally (bass), Roy (drums), Lindy (drums), and Paul (guitar). Their early sound was characterized by a wall of percussive noise, with two drummers, Slayer-inspired thrash metal guitar, and screamed vocals. The group quickly gained attention for their aggressive and unique approach to music.

How The Band Got Started

The origins of Creaming Jesus can be traced back to 1987 when vocalist Andy and guitarist Lil teamed up with several other musicians, including Tally, Roy, Lindy, and Paul. Inspired by a mixture of gothic rock, punk, and thrash metal, the band created a sound that was harsh, energetic, and distinctive. Their name, “Creaming Jesus,” reflected the provocative and rebellious spirit they embodied. Initially, the band’s sound was raw, featuring two drummers and a drum machine, which added to their intense live performances.

After a few initial releases, including a track on the *House of Dolls* fanzine cover-mounted 7″ single and their self-released 12″ EP *Nailed Up For Nothing*, the band signed with Jungle Records. The label re-released their EP and helped them record additional EPs, including *Mug* and *Bark*, which included a cover of The Cure’s “A Forest”. Guitarist Paul Scanlan left the band after their first few EPs and joined Akercocke, a band with a more satanic metal style. This led to the addition of new guitarists Richard and Mario, and Des replaced Lindy on drums, solidifying the band’s lineup during their most productive years.

Later Years and Final Performances

Creaming Jesus toured extensively throughout the UK, Europe, and Scandinavia. They played alongside Fields of the Nephilim in 1990, and their debut album, *Too Fat To Run, Too Stupid To Hide*, was released shortly after. This album helped cement the band’s place in the underground music scene, gaining traction in indie charts. They followed this up with a string of singles, including “Deadtime” and “Ditchdweller V”, further building their fan base.

The band went on to release their second album, *Guilt by Association*, in 1992. The album was produced by Brian Chuck New and received strong attention, remaining on the indie charts for several months. After the departure of drummer Des, percussionist Roger joined the band, and they recorded the *Headrush* EP, which was followed by a successful UK tour.

For their third album, *Chaos for the Converted* (1994), the band experimented with a more psychedelic sound, moving away from their previous industrial gothic thrash style. This change came after they worked with producer Dave Fridmann of Mercury Rev, whom they met during a joint UK tour. After the release of *Chaos for the Converted*, the band’s final performance took place in 1994 at The Venue in New Cross, South London. This performance was later released by Jungle Records under the title *End of an Error*.

Related Projects

After the disbandment of Creaming Jesus, several members went on to pursue new musical projects. Andy, the lead vocalist, joined the extreme noise band Ridiculous and later ventured into solo work under various pseudonyms, including Armchair Generals, The Master, and Filtrum. He is now part of the band Giant Paw and also tours with comedian Andrew O’Neill in their steampunk band, *The Men That Will Not Be Blamed for Nothing*.

Roy and Roger established Noise Management and Noise Merchandise, while guitarist Richard Corden joined the band Star 69 and relocated to Los Angeles in 1995. Despite Creaming Jesus’ brief career, their contributions to the underground music scene have left a lasting impact on several members’ subsequent work.
