Count The Stars
Count the Stars was a pop punk band that originated in Albany, New York, in 1995. The band made a significant impact with their sound until their split in 2003, after recording two albums, one of which was released by Victory Records.
The Formation and Early Years
Count the Stars came together following the breakup of an earlier band that members Chris Kasarjian, David Shapiro, and Clarke Foley had been a part of during high school. Determined to make music their full-time career, Chris began writing new material with David and Clarke. The trio was soon joined by longtime friend Adam Manning, who had played in a local band. Together, they formed Count the Stars and began to create their own unique sound.
Initially performing under the name Visual Reason, the band recorded their debut album “Another Useless Night,” which they released independently on Dreamsand Records. The album gained attention, and the band sold over 5,000 copies, promoting the record by playing local shows and hitting malls to build their underground following.
Breakthrough and Signing to Victory Records
Count the Stars eventually signed to the well-known Chicago label, Victory Records, marking the next chapter of their career. In 2003, they released their second album, Never Be Taken Alive. The album gained considerable attention, and the band embarked on tours with notable groups such as Taking Back Sunday, The Early November, Fall Out Boy, and Copeland. Their success also saw them playing on the Vans Warped Tour, which further solidified their place in the pop punk scene.
The Van Accident and the Band’s Split
Tragedy struck in September 2003 when the band was involved in a van accident. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but the incident led to a shift in the band’s dynamics. The group pushed forward, beginning a full U.S. tour in November of that year, but just a few weeks later, they announced their official breakup on November 30, 2003. The band cited a loss of motivation and made it clear they did not want to assign blame for the split. The sudden end of Count the Stars left fans disappointed, but the band’s legacy remained.
Post-Band Careers
After the breakup, members Clarke Foley and Adam Manning went on to play in two other prominent bands: The Reunion Show and Action Action.
