The Piass

The Piass (THE妃阿甦

The Piass (THE妃阿甦, za piasu) is a Japanese visual kei hardcore punk band that originated in Sapporo in the early 1990s. Despite facing significant challenges, including the loss of three of its four original members within a two-year span, the band, led by Takayuki, has undergone numerous lineup changes and remains active to this day.

History

Formation and Early Years

Formed in 1990 with members Chihiro, Takayuki, Yoshio, and Hiroshi, The Piass initially faced changes in its lineup. After Chihiro’s departure, Takashi briefly took over vocals. However, Chihiro’s return marked a formation that gained attention in the music scene.

Rise and Tragedies

The band gained recognition with their appearance on the omnibus album “Braintrash” in February 1993. Tragedy struck on October 25, 1995, as Chihiro and Hiroshi died during a PV shoot after falling from a bridge. The circumstances surrounding their deaths remain mysterious. In 1997, Yoshio took his own life, leaving Takayuki as the sole surviving member.

Resilience and Rebuilding

On October 25, 1998, exactly three years after the first tragedy, Takayuki began rebuilding the band. New members joined, and the band released its second album in 1999, adopting a new spelling for their name in Japanese, 妃阿甦, meaning “resurrection.”

Evolution and Challenges

The band’s sound underwent a significant shift with their second album in 1999, showcasing a departure from their original style to a more frantic punk rock sound. Various lineup changes and challenges, including Kirala’s departure in 2002, led The Piass to become a live-only band, ceasing their own music releases.

Recent Years

After a hiatus from music releases, The Piass returned in 2006 with the single “Kansen Shou Paranoia.” The band continued to navigate challenges, including lineup changes and the addition of new vocalist Tetsuya in 2007. The band’s transformation into a five-member lineup in 2009 marked a new chapter.
