Converge is an influential American metalcore band formed in 1990 by vocalist Jacob Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou in Salem, Massachusetts. Initially starting as a hardcore punk band, they evolved their style into aggressive, boundary-pushing metalcore, blending elements of hardcore, metal, and post-hardcore, eventually becoming pioneers in the subgenre known as mathcore.

The band’s early formation consisted of Bannon and Ballou, joined by high school friends Jeff Feinberg and Damon Bellorado in 1991. They began by covering hardcore punk, metal, and rock songs, but soon developed their own style and began playing live shows in 1991. Their debut album, Halo in a Haystack, was released in 1994, marking their first official release on Earthmaker Records. This early work helped them set the foundation for what would become one of the most innovative and respected bands in the metalcore scene.

Breakthrough and Jane Doe Era (2000–2003)

Converge’s major breakthrough came with the release of their fourth album, Jane Doe, in 2001. The album was revolutionary in the metalcore scene, earning critical acclaim for its ferocity, complex rhythms, and poetic lyrics. The album has since been ranked among the best metal albums of all time by various publications, including Rolling Stone, and is considered a defining record for the genre.

The recording of Jane Doe saw the band transition from a five-piece to a four-piece band with the departure of guitarist Aaron Dalbec and the addition of bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller. This lineup has remained consistent, with the same core members continuing to produce and perform together to this day.

Continued Success and Evolving Sound (2004–2017)

After the success of Jane Doe, Converge signed with Epitaph Records and continued to expand their sound with albums like You Fail Me (2004) and No Heroes (2006), both of which solidified their reputation as innovators in the metalcore and hardcore scenes. Their relentless touring schedule saw them performing at numerous festivals and gaining a dedicated following across the globe.

In 2012, Converge released All We Love We Leave Behind, an album that continued their exploration of intense, complex musical landscapes. The album received widespread acclaim and further established the band’s dominance in the underground music scene.

Collaborations and Side Projects (2016–Present)

In 2016, Converge collaborated with Chelsea Wolfe for a series of performances under the name Blood Moon, performing ambient and post-rock versions of their tracks. This collaboration led to the 2021 album Bloodmoon: I, which was met with critical acclaim for its unique fusion of Wolfe’s haunting vocals with Converge’s signature sound. The band’s ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of their music continues to keep them at the forefront of heavy music.

In addition to their work with Blood Moon, Converge has been involved in various side projects and collaborations with members of bands like Cave In, Old Man Gloom, and Mutoid Man, contributing to their status as one of the most influential and innovative bands to emerge from the punk underground.
