Clockcleaner
Clockcleaner is a Philadelphia punk band named after a notorious “hot bag” of heroin from the 1980s. The trio; John Sharkey III on vocals/guitar, Karen Horner on 6-string bass, and Richie Charles Jr on drums; draws comparisons to groups like The Birthday Party and Big Black, with influences ranging from Crucifucks to Neil Young.
History
Formed in summer 2003, Clockcleaner released their debut LP The Hassler on Manic Ride Records. After touring for their EP, original bass guitarist Warren Slegel was fired and replaced in the studio by John Sharkey. In early 2006, they issued a 7″ single on Baltimore’s Hit-Dat Records; “Missing Dick” b/w a Crucifucks cover “By the Door”. Soon after, their second LP Nevermind was released on Reptilian Records; the title was chosen as a tongue-in-cheek jab meant to provoke reactions. Following this, Karen Horner became the permanent bassist, making her live debut opening for The Melvins. In late 2006, the band signed to Load Records and, in fall 2007, released their third LP Babylon Rules. This album, with its more gothic influence while retaining punk aesthetics, helped establish them as a notable act in the emerging “skull music” scene.
