Cobra
Cobra is a Japanese punk/Oi! band from Osaka that blends early British Oi! influences with its own distinct sound.
History
The band was originally formed in 1982 by friends Yosu‑ko (vocals/bass), Naoki (guitar) and Mi‑chan (drums). Their first release was the EP Break Out in 1984 on AA Records, after which Naoki departed. Cobra issued several singles and EPs on AA Records; later compiled as Indie Omnibus ’82-’86; and released their debut LP, Stand the Pressure in 1985, featuring striking cover art.
In 1989, Yosu‑ko reconnected with Naoki and Pon (a former member of Laughin’ Nose), while drummer Ki‑yan completed the lineup. Signed by Pony Canyon, the band released two full-length albums, Oi Oi Oi and Captain Nippon in 1990, along with the half‑album Stand! Strong! Straight! in 1991, enjoying commercial success including a Budokan performance. Later, after further lineup changes and releases such as Voice (2001) and Reality Check (2003), Cobra disbanded in 2005.
In 2007, Yosu‑ko revived Cobra with new members, releasing Hello! This is Cobra in 2009. After further personnel changes, the band continues to evolve while honoring its roots.
