Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine

Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine formed in 2008

Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine is a punk rock band led by Jello Biafra. The group released its first album, The Audacity of Hype, in October 2009.

How the Band Came Together

After seeing Iggy Pop’s 60th birthday show at the Warfield in San Francisco, Biafra started planning his own 50th birthday concert and decided to finally launch a new band.

He had tried to get a project going roughly a decade earlier with guitarist Ralph Spight and drummer Jon Weiss. For the new lineup, bassist Billy Gould was brought in, and the group rehearsed for a month before playing a sold-out, two-night stand at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall under the name Jello Biafra and the Axis of Merry Evildoers.

Before recording, guitarist Kimo Ball joined, shifting the band into a two-guitar setup. The group then moved forward under the name Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine.

First Album and What the Songs Focused On

The band recorded The Audacity of Hype for release in October 2009. The record was produced by Biafra and engineered by Matt Kelley, with sessions at Prairie Sun Recording in Cotati, California and Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco.

Musically, the band leaned into sharp, fast punk while also bringing in heavier guitar textures and percussion that pushed beyond a straight, single-lane approach. Lyrically, the album aimed at themes like fear-based politics, policing, and power, with specific tracks called out for topics such as “Homeland Insecurity,” “Three Strikes,” and “Electronic Plantation.”

Touring Lineups and the Bass Role

In 2010, Andrew Weiss temporarily handled bass for live shows while Billy Gould was touring with Faith No More.

EP Release and a Cancelled Show

The band followed the debut album with an EP, Enhanced Methods of Questioning, released on May 31, 2011.

Later that year, the band announced a show in Tel Aviv, Israel, scheduled for July 2, 2011. The plan drew criticism connected to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign, and the band announced on June 29, 2011 that the Tel Aviv show was cancelled.

Studio Work in 2012 and the Next Album

In 2012, the band entered the studio with Andrew Weiss on bass and Paul Della Pelle on drums. The first song released from those sessions was “SHOCK-U-PY!”, described as a tribute to the Occupy movement, released in July 2012 on Bandcamp.

That track later appeared on the band’s next album, White People and the Damage Done, released in 2013.
