Middle Class
Middle Class were an American punk rock band formed in 1977 in Orange County, California. The group is often linked to the earliest wave of Southern California hardcore, thanks in large part to their early recordings and the speed-first approach they brought to late 1970s punk.
How The Band Got Started
The band’s lineup featured Jeff Atta on vocals, Mike Atta on lead guitar, Mike Patton on bass (a different person than the more widely known musician with the same name), and Bruce Atta on drums. They began playing out around 1978, taking early sets through Los Angeles-area clubs and ballrooms as punk audiences shifted toward faster, tougher sounds.
Fast, Shouted Punk And The Early Hardcore Blueprint
Middle Class pushed punk into a more urgent lane, with shouted vocals, quick tempos, and tight, clipped arrangements. Writers and fans have frequently pointed to their early EP Out of Vogue as a foundational hardcore release, and the band has been cited in debates about where hardcore “starts” in Southern California, especially alongside groups like Black Flag.
Releases And What They Did Next
The band’s recorded output is small but heavily discussed. The 1978 EP Out of Vogue is the early statement most tied to their reputation. They followed it with the 1980 EP Scavenged Luxury, and then released their only studio album, Homeland, in 1982.
Homeland is often described as a sharp left turn from the early EPs, with more complicated rhythms and a more jagged, stop-start feel compared to their earlier, straight-line speed. The track “Listen” later found its way onto U.S. college radio playlists in the mid-1980s.
Reunion Years And Losses
Middle Class reunited in 2011 with Matt Simon stepping in on drums in place of Bruce Atta. They played occasional shows until 2014. Guitarist Mike Atta died on April 20, 2014, at age 53, after kidney and lung cancer.
After that period, Mike Patton and Matt Simon continued playing together in Eddie and the Subtitles. On November 11, 2024, it was announced that vocalist Jeff Atta had died.
